I try to avoid that cliche when I can. It's more suited to video games in my opinion.

Depends on the video game, my GM often pulls his final bosses straight out of Final Fantasy and it almost always turns out fantastic.

Same. I only did such an encounter once and that was only because the PCs were trapped in a video game.

I sort of did, but only because the PCs were unaware that the boss they killed was a litch, so when they looted him they took a handful of jewelry; The litch's phylactery included.

I generally prefer combo monsters (Monsters with a built in secondary or a mook generator), but I did use one to fairly good effect.

The party tracks down a goblin tribe that's been raiding the locals, and has taken up residence in a long-abandoned dwarven keep. They fought their way through to the boss layer, finding clues to the history of the place, and signs that their leader hasn't been himself since acquiring an axe from a gravesite.
They eventualy make it to the Boss Encounter Room, where between the substantial minion support and one surprisingly capable goblin chief they had a pretty rough fight.
The players breathed a collective sigh of relief... then the axe lifted off the ground, and the ghost that was possessing said goblin chief manifested, to continue the fight...

Yeah, that's normal for players. Last night's D&D session the party got awarded one Wish from a genie. Cue us sitting there for an hour trying to think of what to wish for. I wanted to wish for a headquarters we can use in between adventures. Another player wants a defensive magic item for his NPC minion. The monk wants to gain knowledge on the mayor's true form from the Free City.

Yeah, we are so overthinking this.

I've explained my players how to disarm a trap without leaving any important information out. It was basically walk to the hidden lever and pull it. They still treated it as if there were more traps as if I actually planned for.

Wow, I finally managed to catch up with this comic. I once read it back around when it first started, but I stopped so I had to reread the entire comic over the past month. Glad to see it's still going strong in 2017.

I'm thinking Blueblood might actually be Elusive. I've been wondering about that for a long time, and I think it would be a pretty hysterical twist.

Yep, that's my theory as well. All the perks of royalty, without the attention and duties of the princesses. Also he's an entitled prick.

Either that or Celestia is Elusive who set up the thieves guild so that Her useless nephew could contribute to tax revenue via guild fees.
