Wow, I don't think any of us guessed that the amulet was a simple Find-A-Phone app.

My betting would have been on an otherwise irrelevant item with Nystul's Magic Aura (or whatever the 4e equivalent is) cast on it.
ZhonLord 27th Oct 2022, 1:18 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, with all my emphasis on the amulets actually protecting each bearer from their brother, I did kinda miss an obvious counterpoint - that Scorpan would have given his amulet to one of the princesses back when Tirek was first captured, and it would have been kept in a safe place should he ever escape again. It would have been a very simple and straightforward solution to fighting a guy who drains the magical essence of his victims.

Given the wide spectrum of magical potential, it would have been quite a specific call out to do a locater. Though, I am at least pretty proud of getting at least in the same zip code with the guess of self-cleaning as far as power levels go.

"Bested by a brute...!"

A brute with cunning and thought isn't really a brute now is he?

I gotta say "As a momento of your failure" is pure rubbing in the salt win. I wonder how long Celestia-DM has been holding onto that (or a similar) line, just waiting for the moment when the tables were turned.

A lot of people seem to forget that just being a massively strong "brute" does not necessarily mean they're dumb. In fact a lot of famous heavy-hitters are really quite intelligent, even going back to ancient myths and stuff - Hercules, despite being monstrously strong, couldn't just punch his way through all of the twelve labors, he had to use his brain.

How much do you want to bet that it will be used to track down Scorpan to help take down Tirek- after all I don't think we have heard what Scorpan can do, and he is Tirek's brother, so who want's to bet HE has some amazing powers as well, considering he helped beat him before.

The only place Scorpan actually appeared on screen was in G1 (Midnight Castle) where he had no useful powers whatsoever. The comic featuring the brothers explained that Tirek's powers were all learned, and he is not a naturally powerful species. Therefore Scorpan, without his brother's lust for power, remained a normal mortal. What Scorpan did to help defeat Tirek, according to the G4 lore, is defect to the ponies and tell the Princesses Tirek's whole plan, giving them time to stop it before Tirek was ready.

Congrats, that's how long One Piece's Wano Arc lasted- 4 years on the same Island in our time, but something like 2 weeks for Luffy and his friends.

Though you have Oda beat in nested time, since its been 4 years for you, several sessions for the players, and how much time for the characters? Assuming a week between sessions and this being either the 5th or 7th session (I forget if the 2 parters were multiple sessions in universe, maybe its even more) so assume a minimum of 5 weeks, then it breaks down because outside of combat it is easier for a game world to take up way more time then it takes to play it with travel times and sleeping handwaved- but each adventure did get resolved pretty fast in universe, baring things like putting off dealing with Discord's ponyville chaos bubble, so potentially less than a week for the characters, but probably not that short a span. That is 4 years to 5 weeks to 1 week, and once combat starts it will take you days to cover the players taking minutes to cover actions happening in seconds.

That got away from me, in any case congrats again on such a long running story.

What I love so much about this is that Discord, the master of planning, trickery, and cunning, was tricked by the obvious oncoming brick wall method, helped a long by his own big mouth.

It's like when your 20 INT wizard fails to solve a puzzle when the 8 INT fighter just does the obvious answer after getting an idea from the wizard and it works. :3
The Old One 27th Oct 2022, 1:18 PM edit delete reply
A master indeed, but so full of himself he just assumed he was winning without remembering he was just as much a PC as anyone else in the game. I love when arrogance is what trips a guy up.
TyrantViewer 27th Oct 2022, 8:32 PM edit delete reply
Especially since recruiting Tirek was his Idea to begin with, he cowrote the scenario that defeated him- of course there are some fun ways this can work out, straight up redemption, a weakened discord being managed, him still turning to stone, tirek accidentally absorbing the petrification effect etc. Thats all before getting into how this will work on the level of the players not the characters- ie how will Discord's player be incorporated in the future if at all.

Or like when some guy is demonstrating the superiority of his master swordsmanship, swinging his blade around in a precise display of deft technical skill, confident in his ability to cut down his opponent as soon as battle is joined... and the guy with a whip pulls out a gun and shoots him.
Draxynnic 28th Oct 2022, 2:39 AM edit delete reply
That's certainly one way to ford the obstacle.

I think we definitely all saw this coming, at least for the most part.

In character, Discord was defeated by his own arrogance, but out of character, what managed to get DiscordDM was two main issues:

1: He's clearly the type of player who seems to think that the DM and Players are in pure opposition, rather than a DM guiding their players through an enjoyable story while also providing challenge and tests of skill. He didn't think that the betrayal would come because he thinks that a DM just has free reign and all of the power in the world and failed to understand that he's just as much of a character as the players are.

2: He failed to recognize that he is no longer co-DMing in this game anymore. He certainly has some say, but he was so focused on having a scenario where he still gets to hold all of the cards that the idea he still has the restrictions of a player clearly caught him way off guard. His reaction to being told he could have rolled says everything: his DMing style is him holding full power to do whatever he wants as I said, and the idea that he would have to think like a player is not something that would ever be in his head.

Will be interesting to see where this goes from here. I cannot imagine his player will be taking it very well.

It seems almost a little strange that Discord of all people is the _only_ one who _didn't_ see this coming. The girls obviously did, and I'm assuming none of this was planned out with CelestiaDM before hand. (They do have SOMETHING planned as a secret weapon or somesuch, but I doubt this is it).
ark 28th Oct 2022, 6:37 AM edit delete reply
I'm not sure how to feel about 'well, if you had rolled Insight, you might have noticed that he was lying.'
Otterfriend 28th Oct 2022, 8:04 AM edit delete reply
I read it more as "if you'd bothered to analyze the amulet, you would have learned it didn't do what he said it did" (in the previous strip, the GM is saying that Discord could have rolled to determine the item's true function, not that he could have rolled versus bluff). As has been mentioned upthread, "always identify the magic item" is such a fundamental principal of DnD that it's hard to feel much pity for a chap who ignores it- he's lucky it wasn't a straight-up cursed item rather than just an irrelevant one.
Roguim 28th Oct 2022, 3:01 PM edit delete reply
Not by a brute (as he showed to be very cunning) but by your own hubris, a simple identify would reveal Tirek lie, but i was expected something that prevented both users to attack each other (and the catch being that only works for Tirek and Scorpan) not an where he is app...
