I think I've just got to reckon with the fact that, over the course of its runtime, Friendship is Magic put together a surprisingly strong stable (heh) of villains. Or at least I really like them overall.

Notice: Guest comic submissions are open! Guidelines here. Deadline: January 27th, 2023.

Nightmare Moon, bringer of eternal night, shaper of the entire world's ecosystem and queen of all that goes bump in the night.

Discord, the embodiment of chaos and madness, a nigh unstoppable force that causes all to dance to his tune.

Chrysalis, queen of a race that can take the place of those you care most deeply about, turning a cherished relationship into a life of parasite and victim with no recourse.

Sombra, immortal slavemaster and tyrant king, bringer of despair and sorrow to all within his domain.

And Tirek, the ever-hungry, he who claims the essence of your soul and adds it to his own power, leaving you a helpless husk who can only watch as he moves on to absorb all the power the world has to offer.

I very much agree, MLP's villains can easily stand proud alongside Disney's Golden Era of Villainy - Maleficant, Jafar, Scar, Hook, Ursula and more.

Nightmare Moon, A whinny pony that was jealous of her big sister and was defeated by civilians

Discord, a clown that want attention and when he don't get it, he try to be more and more flashy to get it

Chrysalis, Queen of shapeshifting bugs and the worst actress and planmaker

Sombra, obsessed with Stairs and Crystal but more seriously, he almost had it but was defeated by a baby dragon, after he put the only thing that could stop him behind a simple fear spell

Tirek, Too much muscle and not enough brain, with too much greed, he had the ponies and decided to 'let the friends get free'

Starlight Glimmer: Let's welcome the URSS and Communism, seriously, she should have more experience to know that Fluttershy was not brainwashed

Cozy Glow: She almost had it, but her 'nice girl' act failed in the end because her anger

Maleficant, Jafar, and Ursula certainly stack up as a serious threat to a whole country, but Scar and Hook were just regular dudes with a few minions. They only lasted as long as they did because the good guys ignored them until it got personal.

On average, I think the MLP season villains tended to be significantly more powerful than their classic Disney counterparts. The three Disney villains listed above are the only ones capable of regional weather control, as far as I can recall, but that's been standard MLP villain kit since G1.

(Okay, Elsa is also in that league, but her villain status is pretty ambiguous.)

In terms of power, sure. But I was more talking about the fact that all the villains in the Disney golden era weren't some sympathetic "oh so that's why" category of villain. They were the bad guys, they knew it, they owned it, and they followed through on it. Even in Hook's case, he wanted free reign over an island that would keep him and his crew eternally young for an endless era of piracy to come, and he was perfectly happy killing those snot-nosed kids to make it possible. Even the least ambitious of them, Shere Khan, was so casually smug about his own strength and the certainty of getting his way that he also qualifies as Evil for Evil's Sake. All of the MLP villains are like this except Starlight, THAT'S why I call them equals to the Disney Golden Era.

Huh, looking at Tirek as he's absorbing magic in a still frame looks quite a bit creepier.

Funny how different people see different thing; I was just thinking he looks so gosh-darn happy in that frame. :D

Hmmm, with the horns, Tirek looks more like a goat/horse centaur than a monkey/horse centaur. 🤔
Prairie Son 11th Jul 2022, 9:15 AM edit delete reply
If you look at his hooves, he's a bull, not a horse. So the horns make sense.

And surprising magic-sucker is surprising...and yeas FIM have a good group of villains, eternal night bringer, Lord of chaos and reality wrapper, eternal slaver-master fear user monarch, shapeshifters emotional eaters, and magic/essence eater.

Everyone keeps listing these super powerful villains and forgetting the worst of them all: A Child.
RuBoo 9th Jul 2022, 10:18 PM edit delete reply
The one of whom you speak is no child, she is a monster who stole one’s form. Diamond Tiara was a child; a spoiled brat, perhaps, but a child nonetheless. That apocalypse in progress is no child.
