Ah, being overly prepared for a campaign. That's a fantasy I once had...

Later today, at 3PM Pacific, I'll be livestreaming the continuation of September's SpudShot that's now sprawling out into its own mini-campaign. (Unfortunately, more than half the participants got sick, so that game's postponed.) Hopefully today or tomorrow, I'll be posting the October SpudShot premise and character application survey to Patreon for all my $1+ patrons! It's gonna be a busy weekend.

Being overly prepared for a campaign is just begging for the players to do something completely unexpected within the first five minutes.

I learned to just keep my notes in framework form with only hints of details. Gotta keep a flexible plot idea for unexpected PC plans. ...which happens a LOT over the course of a campaign.

Like the time I totally had the players set up to go find some treasure in a cave system and instead they teleport half-way across the country to go steal something from an old wizard's tower. Wasn't even a plan for another 4-5 levels. Totally threw me off my game that session, but I managed to play it off the cuff fairly well.

Nearly killed them though due to them being under-leveled.

Well, that's their fault. They should know what happens when you leave the campaign rails.

I can't recall the exact page # but Darths and Droids addresses this somewhere in the latter part of the (I think) first 100 pages. Something like "I've learned not to plan more than 10 minutes ahead with you guys"

Where were you when I discovered Scion? I still haven't worked out a viable method for Game preparation yet. I overthink and over plan and almost completely fall apart when things go off the rails.

And this is why I run XD20. I may be flat-footed by my excitable rookie players, but with such an ultralight system it takes moments to readjust. If I need to throw a fully-statted army at my players, it will take me two minutes.

I do wish I could do something akin to the GM of the All Guardsmen Party, though. He's crazy-prepared; according to his posts on Reddit he uses flowcharts to cover every possible eventuality (though knowing his players so well helps cut down the options).

Honestly some of my best ideas happen because I haven't been planning everything in advance. I'm currently running a game of Exalted and, while I did plan out some general stuff for the current plot, it's gained an immense amount of nuance from me responding to stuff the players have done and coming up with things on the fly. I could not have planned something this cool if I had a completely filled out wiki of everything.

That said, I do still plan out the general plot details and try to design some info about characters in advance, because I'm not as good at handling that on the fly.
