I barely got any time to work on Story Time this week, like I suspected. With next week proving to be a continuation of this one's madness, plus some extras, I'm giving myself an extra two weeks to work on Story Time 3.

So, page 700. The past milestones - 200 through 600 - have been celebrated with an attitude of amazement, gratitude, and humble disbelief. Not so much this one.

It's been a rough few weeks leading up to this. My buffer's pretty much drained by now. There have been a couple of incidents I can recall where I've woken up early to grab screencaps and put together the comic within the hour it goes up. Page 700, for me personally, is less of a mystery in what it represents compared to milestones past. For me, it means I've survived. I've persevered. I've endured. If barely.

I'll admit it's more melancholy than it deserves, but that's the kind of mood I'm in, and I see no reason to pretend otherwise.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I could use a lengthy sabbatical and now would be a great time to start submitting guest comics, if you've got any ideas kicking around. We're coming up on the end of this arc anyway.

I get the feeling that, when writing for Pinkie Pie, the goal is just to find a way to include all her wackiness in the comic, in context.

'ForEVER' became 'NEVER!' and so on.

The girls are ready to pass on their titles as the Elements of Harmony.
Who should they pass it on to?

There's two answers to that question:

If they're passing the elements on because they're old, it would have to be to ponies that are currently foals, or not even born yet. The CMC have virtues, but I don't think they match the elements (SB could be kindness, but AB is bravery and I'm not sure what Scoots is)

If you want understudies among their peers however:
Laughter - Derpy, Minuette
Kindness - Cheerilee, Cadence
Loyalty - Spike, Lyra (Edit: maybe Gilda, too)
Generosity - Coco Pommel, The Cakes (maybe)
Honesty - Coco Pommel, Zecora
Magic - Moondancer, Sunset Shimmer, Trixie, Zecora, maybe Starlight Glimmer (gag)

More the second then the first.

> (SB could be kindness, but AB is bravery and I'm not sure what Scoots is)

I saw an interesting story once where Scootaloo ended up with the element of Magic.

And another where Apple Bloom ended up with what she jokingly called the Element of Sufficiently Advanced Technology.

Spike more than deserves that element of loyalty

I prefer to think everyone has their own element, just they would pass on the power. Or maybe they get both their own element and the old ones + power for both.

Either way I am way too tired for this tonight, I've been working too much on being a FIRST Robotics Mentor.

After Friendship Games, and the specific text of Sunset Shimmer's declaration to Midnight Sparkle before transforming, I'm thinking that Sunset may actually be the *seventh* Element of Harmony. Like Doctor Who, it's the element which has been hidden in plain sight the whole time.

The Element of Friendship.
Xaran Alamas 19th Jan 2016, 3:54 PM edit delete reply
Isn't that what Magic is though in the context of the Elements? It's specifically the Magic of Friendship, way back in the pilot it was described as the spark that brings the rest together, and in the theme song after listing the other five it's 'Magic makes it all complete'
Also it is called Friendship IS Magic.

As for Sunset, I firmly believe she is a seventh element (though I have seen convincing arguments for her being the Human World Element of Magic) one I quite like is the Element of Forgiveness.

When you reach 1000 comics you should do something super extra awesome as a reward.

Like buy a cake.

A pony themed cake.

And give it to us.

Seriously though good job. Very few people can consistently update a comic for any greater lengths of time.
The Old One 16th Jan 2016, 10:07 AM edit delete reply
I'm pretty sure we should be buying him the cake.

Although I'm sure he'd appreciate the cost of a cake as a donation a bit more (just so he don't end up with mountains of cake. That stuff goes south pretty quick)

I was gonna say plane ticket and get him to Disney World. ...so as I can see Spud in person. ;)

But Disney is expensive these days. ...oh, I know! Universal Studios! That's a cheaper ticket.

I am awesome at making desserts. I could make something!

My cakes are awesome, but my brownies are better. Reviews: "Awesome", "Amazing", "Godly", "Really really good", "Not Death by Chocolate, but just Death."

Well I did buy Spud a subway sandwich one time. Maybe I'll buy him another one when we get to that point. Or maybe two.

Or maybe I can help Digo make that plane ticket a reality. I've never been to Disney World or Universal Studios and this is as good of a reason as any to splurge. But we'll see what happens when we get there.

The last panel is what I like about table-top RPGs vs. computer games.
"The guard waves his club in your face and demands what you're doing here."
"I tear off all my clothes and start dancing while singing 'I'm A Yankee Doodle Dandy'."
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition OR the "George M Cohan maneuver"!
Kale 16th Jan 2016, 8:12 AM edit delete reply
True, although at that point I would probably have the guard arrest them, or at least attempt to arrest them, for being drunk and causing a disturbance. Or beat them into unconsciousness depending upon the alignment of the city.

I'm sure I've posted something akin to this before, but thanks for keeping the comic going Spudd!

Congratulations on the milestone too. Even if you don't seem in the most celebratory of moods right now, here's hoping things get better for ya!

You've been doing this for five and a half years, Spud. If you want to take a break for like a week, or even a month, we'll understand. Treat yourself. If you haven't got your health, you haven't really got anything at all.

You have Fallout: Equestria to draw on. Surely there must be something recent there?

But if NS needs guest comics, I'll try to provide at least one this time. I'll probably get the idea to him this weekend, to avoid the communication mishap of last time.

Congrats on reaching 700 pages Spud. We all appreciate what you do here, even if we don't always voice it.

As for the page, I kinda hope the DM is wasting their time. At this point, they've completely ignored whatever plans he had to go chasing after a PC who's player isn't even here when it's kinda obvious that isn't what either the DM or player wanted. They deserve to have a session wasted for their unnecessary derailment, especially Rainbow who is way to into the idea of pummeling another player's character, especially when said player isn't present. Why are their characters friends again?

"It matters if you're wasting our time." Really, Twi? REALLY?

First off, you'all are the ones who insisted on pursuing this even though you know the player is gone. Second of all, y'all are playing an role-playing game! The whole point is to have fun and waste time! If you want to be productive, go, I don't know, learn a foreign language or something.

True about games, until people start implementing secret messages about (what could be) some answers to the secrets of life.

Though seriously, I agree completely. Twilight should know about the serious speed bumps they were going to get since the DM put the cover wall down and told them that they were likely to go nowhere. I'm really happy that Pinkie seems to know that, and just lets Applejack go.
Boris Carlot 17th Jan 2016, 4:31 AM edit delete reply
Spending three to five hours on trying to get something accomplished when the DM never had any intention of allowing it to succeed no matter what happens isn't at all satisfying. That's just wasting everyone's valuable playing time. The PCs don't always win, but if you're going to allow them to persue a plot thread this far there should be *a chance* to succeed.

I don't think that's what the Pony DM is doing though. Still not sure where this is going, but I'm fairly sure it's not screwing the players.

"if we're ALL wasting our time."

ALL. Which includes the DM. She's apparently realizing that they might have dragged the DM onto an unfun adventure and probably was about to suggest they stop before Pinkie spoke up.

What is it with people and seeing the worst about characters just from a few lines of dialogue?

700th comic! I have to say, I'm amazed. Personally, I would probably quit after the first annual... I admire your endurance and creativity, Spud, but you're getting to a point, where you'd rather quit than go on. Seriously, man, you have to take a good break! We'll all understand and be good with guest arcs (or even no comics at all) for a while.

Congratulations on 700 comics! I originally found this comic because someone pointed me at the Story Time videos, and I found those truly incredible. So I had to read the comic they came from. I like Darths and Droids, but I like FiD even more. From here, I went and listened to the Fallout is Dragons podcast.

You do amazing work, Spud. Thanks for taking the time to do so. Take all the time you need to recover (and not just to work on Story Time 3, but to really rest and deal with whatever you have going on). We'll be here when you get back.

Ah yes, the old "let's go ahead and do something ridiculously stupid in order to get what I want" ploy. Effectively keeping the rest of the party from harassing AJ by focusing their efforts on saving Pinkie from her rather rash decision. Good one, Ms. Pie, good one.

Oh, before I forget, Congrats on 700, Spud! Looking forward to the next 700! ^_^

Oh, of course that's what she's doing! For some reason, it didn't quite get what she was up to. I just thought she was simply expecting Rarity to catch her in sudden determination to give AJ some space ASAP. Maybe it's been too long since I've seen that episode. I dunno. Kinda been feeling...off these past two weeks or so. :/ Symptoms include, feeling dazed, confusion, trouble getting t' sleep, soreness, stiffness, loneliness, chest pain, lack of appetite and concentration and being in'a constant state of unrest. Ugh. I worry for my grades... ᴵ ᵇᵉᶫᶦᵉᵛᵉ ᴵ'ᵐ ˢᵘᶠᶠᵉʳᶦᶰᵍ ᶠʳᵒᵐ ᶠʳᵒᵐ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᵐᵒˢᵗ ʷᵒᵘᶫᵈ ᶜᵃᶫᶫ ᶫᵒᵛᵉˢᶦᶜᵏᶰᵉˢˢ ᵃᶰᵈ ʰᵃᵛᵉᶰ'ᵗ ᵃ ᶜᶫᵘᵉ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᵗᵒ ᵈᵒ 'ᵇᵒᵘᵗ ᶦᵗ⋅⋅⋅
