Ridiculous failures are always more fun when the players roll with it.* A good sense of humor can help failure sting less and keep it from dragging things down.

*Which they might as well, because rolling is what got them there in the first place.

I think Rainbow dash would be that way even with a higher roll.

That describes some of my players; they get upset, because the great social skill ranks they have gets offset by the penalties from what comes out of their mouths...

Objection! "Rodeo" isn't a race!
Toric 22nd Oct 2015, 7:13 AM edit delete reply
HOLD IT! How can we know whether or not there is or was a race included in this rodeo without having attended it! As an expert at races, Rainbow Dash is the more valid account!
Digo 22nd Oct 2015, 7:26 AM edit delete reply
Objection! Rainbow Dash was not a witness to the rodeo and thus all rodeo events that have occurred by Dash's account are conjecture!
Toric 22nd Oct 2015, 7:31 AM edit delete reply
Objection! As an expert racer and athlete, Rainbow Dash is capable of determining the events that took place based on the remaining event setup!
Digo 22nd Oct 2015, 7:33 AM edit delete reply
Hold It! The events are being torn down as they arrived, thus the crime scene evidence has been compromised and may not be fully indicative of what events have transpired.
Toric 22nd Oct 2015, 7:38 AM edit delete reply
Maybe not, but it is presently unclear which events have already been torn down. Therefore, evidence of a race could still easily be present, especially given the long-lasting nature of tracks or painted lines.
TAKE THAT!

Now then, (Skill check: Knowledge Local) If this event is so important and big enough to warrant a Gala ticket for the winner, then its most common events if not the entire roster would be publicly known and available.

If a timer was used for any event, then a race of some kind was present in the rodeo. Whether it was an actual race to a finish line, or a race to hog-tie an opponent, for example.

OOC: This is also called a pennant race.

Eh, I think it'd be fine to just describe 'Apple Jack, orange-ish mare, cowboy hat, participated in the competition'
Doesn't make them sound incompetent, but at the same time they'd have a hard time finding her.
Heck, a low roll says more about their luck (they failed to find the people who'd actually know her) and less about their skill; Even if they brought a changeling to give a perfect image, it'd be useless if they asked people who were busy during the competition.
Greenhornet 22nd Oct 2015, 12:17 PM edit delete reply

Last night I had a weird dream that I got invited to Spud's place to attend an actual tabletop RPG with the other Dragon Mawlers. Which was extra-weird cause I only remember seeing a single image of Spud and I know nothing of what everyone else actually looked like. The people in the dream are probably way off from their actual descriptions.

Also, we were all playing 1st edition D&D and the movie Anastasia was playing on an old TV in the background. Like I said, weird.

My first thought when reading this and seeing the words Spud, DnD, and Anastasia together is that somehow I arrived in late with Subway sandwiches for everyone and I played a Lich that burst into song when he is first introduced into the game.

This, people, is why I try really hard not to post when I first wake up for the day.
MissingMind 22nd Oct 2015, 7:33 AM edit delete reply
Emm.... a litch doing a song and dance for an introduction.

Has possibilities. Is it possible for a bard to become a litch?
Toric 22nd Oct 2015, 7:44 AM edit delete reply
Technically, I think so. They cast Arcane magic and could theoretically devote themselves to studying phylacteries
Digo 22nd Oct 2015, 8:37 AM edit delete reply
I believe the only written requirements in the game for becoming a lich are:

-Have an effective Caster Level of 11 (any spellcasting class).
-Have the Craft Wonderous Item feat.

So, I can see a lich bard. Would certainly be different. :3
cedric13sai 22nd Oct 2015, 9:07 AM edit delete reply
OMG!! Brook from One Piece is a Lich and his afro is the phylactery!!
Winged Cat 22nd Oct 2015, 11:26 AM edit delete reply
You just noticed? The same can be speculated about many long-lived undead with a thematic item. In his case, hair might not normally have much power but it's his own hair (preserved and, given what they get up to, likely regenerated slowly over time).
Edgewalker_001 23rd Oct 2015, 4:18 AM edit delete reply
Yes, that is pretty much how he becomes undead as I recall. So yes, his afro is totally his phylactery.
Seeing how much crap happens later I figure he succeeded in that thing Lathander cursed that guy in the Charwood for and made a phylactery that could only be destroyed by the gods.
Winged Cat 22nd Oct 2015, 11:23 AM edit delete reply
So...lich druid can be a thing?

Lich paladin or cleric has been done, I believe.
Toric 22nd Oct 2015, 12:43 PM edit delete reply

Winged Cat 22nd Oct 2015, 11:27 AM edit delete reply
Haven't needed to binge since I first discovered this comic over a year ago. I think it took me about a week (across multiple sessions) to catch up to the then-present.
Haledrake 22nd Oct 2015, 7:20 AM edit delete reply
The comic's funny but I really hope most DMs don't do stuff like this. Checks are supposed to be for things that you can fail at. Some might disagree but I seriously think that it's not possible to fail at finding SOMEONE that's seen Applejack, the Element of Honesty, the eventual matriarch of the Apple family, the mare who's been winning medals at rodeos around Equestria since she was a filly.

Sorry to be kind of a party pooper, I just know some people use this wonderful comic as inspiration for their own games and I hate to see DMs going overboard with checks/challenges.
Digo 22nd Oct 2015, 7:32 AM edit delete reply
I think the PCs just made up their own results here without the GM actually giving them direction. They're probably just joking, as it feels very much like the kind of humor my groups tend to take when the whole group rolls badly.
Borg 22nd Oct 2015, 8:20 AM edit delete reply
Reminds me of the other day when I fenced a bit with another PC (using modern, non-sharp fencing sabers). I did so badly that we jokingly rolled on a random damage table and determined that my right arm had been cut off. By a weapon that doesn't even have an edge.
Winged Cat 22nd Oct 2015, 11:28 AM edit delete reply
...players turning the tables, not showing the GM their rolls?
Super_Big_Mac 23rd Oct 2015, 2:42 PM edit delete reply
The Witch and my Rogue had a duo session we ended up calling Crit-Fail: The lol because both of us and the GM only ever rolled Crits, both Fails and Wins. The Bearded Devil Boss rolled a Nat 1 Will Save against Slumber. I then got an auto-crit OHKO in the Surprise Round. lots of hilarity, including the Witch ripping its heart out with her bare hooves.
terrycloth 22nd Oct 2015, 11:42 AM edit delete reply
They weren't trying to find 'someone who's seen Applejack' they were trying to find 'someone who knows where Applejack is now', which is harder since the rodeo's been over for at least a day.

Horses have only two types of cone cells. They see color, but it's much more limited than ours.

*Mostly Spoiler Free Review*

(Cause I've become more comfortable with Spud and all you guys and I wanna be myself)

The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows

(I had notes but I lost them so here we go)

More Character Development in this season as we jump from one of the best moments of the series in the last episode to this one

Title say's it all Pinkie Pie Knows Something........ yeah so do we.

Highlights of the Episode

1) Good to see some popular background Characters again (Season 5 Background Ponies are Magic, "What do you mean the series is about the purple alicorn and her friends?" )

2) Pinkie Sense being used as an excuse for Pinkie by Pinkie (Hey the show has tried crazier *Shrugs* )

3) What are the CMC up to a week after making us all have the Feels, adventure? Helping another class mate? something productive? ( What!?! They're bored and want to gossip!?!)

4) Rainbow Dash say's what everyone has been thinking since Season 3 ( "The answer is Yes Dashie she is acting Weirder and Weirder!")

5) Shining Armor and Cadance are visiting (Don't ask me why it's not like we found this out in the first minute of the episode or anything sheesh) Twilight prepared Shining Armor's guest room to be just like his Childhood room... Cut to the Captian of the Guard totally Fanboying out and being as Adorkable as his Sister (2nd favorite part of the episode)

6) Lastly (weallknowwhytheyaretherebutstillneedtosayitbabyokthere) Twilight finding out the big news and it dawning on her leads to my favorite part of the episode (TwilightIsgoingtobeanauntandshelookssocutewhenshesaysitanddawwwww)

Yeah I love doing these reviews and now that i'm out of my shell so to speak my humor can be shared

So, I made a post on here yesterday, asking for help and advice in a particular field, but I'm not sure anyone saw it given it was on the bottom of the comments, a day after the page was posted. Not sure if I'll have any better luck now... basically, I'm doing some assorted MLP-to-D&D conversions...
Winged Cat 23rd Oct 2015, 2:18 PM edit delete reply
You'll have to give more details if you want help.

That said - "which pony would be which Pathfinder class in a humanoid setting"? If you mean these 6 specific ponies, why not use the classes they are playing? Check the Cast page for their sheets. For example, Pathfinder has a wizard class; why would Twilight Sparkle as a human not be that?

If you mean earth pony/pegasus/unicorn/alicorn in general, those are races. As such they translate to Pathfinder races, not classes, and preferably subraces of a common race. Perhaps variants of the human race, if you're forcing them into humanoid races?

Or do you mean something else?
Dusk Raven 23rd Oct 2015, 8:44 PM edit delete reply
Well, I've learned to seek interest before posting details, so I don't end up writing a wall of text that no one reads.

Anyway, these six? Got them down pat, along with Spike, Shining Armor, and a few others. I'm thinking of everypony else, like the background ponies the fandom holds so dear. And, since I was thinking about a setting where the next generation of heroes is coming up - centered on the CMC plus Dinky and Pipsqueak.

THEN I'll start the text walls...

When it comes to ridiculous rolls and rolling with it, our group (maybe. Probably?) does it best.

My character is now blind in one eye due to rolling a nat 1 on three Perception checks in a row. We blame all my terrible rolls on my missing eye, now. (It is also an item our Ranger can pull out of his Hammerspace Quiver of Randomness)

My Rogue is also (during certain Role Play moments, ie when talking with mares) given a +(20/1d4) on Diplomacy and Bluff checks because at the start of our first session we rolled Beauty Scores (BS) to see how good our characters looked. I got a Nat 20, which the DM ruled also gave me an extra point in my CHA to bring it up to 10 from 9.

Other characters have had equally ridiculous rolls (The Witch and my Rogue Diplomanced a Kraken into not eating us, as we were only level 4 and therefore not seasoned enough to be tasty), and it's amazing to roll-play and roleplay at the same time.

In an inversion, everyone was asked to make a Knowledge: Geography check (which I had no points in), and everyone else failed it. So I said, "Don't worry you guys, I read it in a book once!" <Rolls>... Nat20. DM (once he's done laughing): "Well... You know enough about the surrounding area to know that there are a few temples nearby; one for Blaze, one for the Sun Queen, and one for the Unspoken is rumored to be in the area as well. The road leading to the Unspoken's rumored temple spells out the phrase, uh, 'Illiana is a big doodoo-head,' if read from above, though whether the temple is real still remains a mystery."

After that, I drew (in my worst cursive) a road shaped as such in the blank space beside the world map. It has stayed there ever since.
