So the Fallout is Dragons group had a practice session over the weekend. Sometime within the next 12 hours, the recording of that game will be available on YouTube. With any luck, this'll become a weekly podcast thing.

Anyway, watch this space for the links to the first episode.

One-on-one time with a single player to work out some plot point is expected, but I hate when they drag on and leave the other players sitting around doing nothing.

When i'm GMing, I try to time myself so I don't get too long-winded.

As a player, if i'm waiting, I try to plan out stuff with other waiting players so that once we get back into the action, we can jump to it quickly.

^Just wanted to chime in here with my personal experiences, but usually, whenever I was working on a plot point or sidequest (in-person, as opposed to PbP or skype-based games) with some of a party, the rest of the party would be playing a fast-paced card game or something along those lines to bide their time. Munchkin, Fluxx, and Ninja vs. Ninja were all popular picks for this type of situation (:

Interesting way to pass the time waiting. Better than players who breakout their laptops and smart phones. Those got distracting big time.

And no one kept character sheets on them either...

Iron Will for me too. Especially since he wasn't a villain. You weren't satisfied with the results of his self-help course? Okay, he's charging you nothing, have a nice day he's off to do some shopping in the town of ponies that keep calling him a monster.

Yeah, the "villain" of the episode has a moral high-ground, especially against Rarity who ALWAYS refers to him as a monster, even long before she sees him.
Digo 21st Jan 2014, 9:58 AM edit delete reply
His seminar lessons are questionable, but he is a minotaur of his word. Never directly hurt anyone. It was just his biz.

Heck, Trixie was the same way. Boastful? Sure was, but she was just an entertainer. What AJ, Dash, and Rarity were doing with heckling her and then getting beaten at their own tricks really was their own fault. If you don't like the show, nothing stopped one from just leaving. :)

I don't think Zecora counts. She can be a pony, depending on how you look at it. After all, zebras are equines that can interbreed with ponies. They're so genetically close, you could call them a subspecies of pony.

I'm gonna go on record here. Doomie is best nonpony.

Wild speculation time! What do you think is the basis of Pinkie Sense, whether in the show or in FiD?

My guess is limited omnitemporality. That is, Pinkie is somewhat aware of herself at all points in time. The twitches and such are empathic cues based on her perceiving stimuli as they happen in the future.

This, of course, doesn't just violate causality but bends it over the table and does unspeakable things involving root vegetables. But hey, Pinkie Pie.
Digo 21st Jan 2014, 7:03 AM edit delete reply
Um...

Anyway, I figure it's just a minor clairvoyance power. One that is vague, but consistant with the twitchings where Pinkie can at least know the general idea (as she demonstrated a list of different combos and such she's jotted down).
Midnight Blaze 21st Jan 2014, 7:08 AM edit delete reply

The sonic rainboom!

Think about it. The sonic rainboom is already a complex event in space-time. It very intentionally effected the ponies who would later become the bearers of the elements of harmony. We have absolutely no evidence that it gave anypony else their cutie mark other than the mane 6. This is not a coincidence, and we already know time travel is possible in the MLP universe. Rainbow Dash was being loyal the first time around to all her friends, helping them achieve their potential.

So, who got seriously influenced by the sonic rainboom? Well, AJ was pretty far away, Flutters was blocked by trees, Rarity was blocked by a giant rock, and Rainbow Dash was the one who created it. Twilight was blocked by a window, but clearly that wasn't full protection so close by, as she absorbed the powers immediately. Twilight has magic though, so she releases the power from the sonic rainboom almost as fast. I'm guessing some residual energy makes her better at magic than she otherwise would be, but there isn't much left there.

Pinkie though, Pinkie absorbs the energy and doesn't have a mechanism to release it. That energy is still in her body today. She probably doesn't understand this fully, but that's a whole lot of energy with nowhere to go, and she now can use this energy to bend time/space and be happy.

Now, this also provides us with another likely explanation to an episode 1 plot point: how does Princess Celestia know to set Twilight up with everypony the day before Nightmare Moon returns? Well, Cele could clearly recognize Twi's cutie mark as the element of magic, and probably was curious about the sonic rainboom. After talking to RD, or having a guard talk to RD, she probably recognized that RD was the element of loyalty, and noticed a pattern. Therefore, she used whatever method was at her disposal to keep whoever got their cutie mark from the sonic rainboom in Ponyville, and put these specific ponies on the list for Twilight to find. I think Celestia discovered everypony except Pinkie Pie well before the events of the season premiere, but Pinkie Pie just decided to throw herself in to Ponyville anyway.
Gomegadon 21st Jan 2014, 6:53 PM edit delete reply
That sounds a lot like how it worked with the seers/oracles in that Pompei episode of Doctor Who, so what you are saying is that Rainbow Dash did not just break the sound barrier but she cracked time, as a little filly.
evilauthor 21st Jan 2014, 8:28 AM edit delete reply
I favor the hyper-awareness theory. Pinkie is highly aware of her surroundings and subconsciously analyzes it, working out what's going to happen right before it happens. The results of this subconscious analyzing gets expressed as body twitches that Pinkie's conscious mind can read.

As such, Pinkie Sense is foretells the future like you watching someone tossing a ball in the air and "foretelling" that it will fall back down. Pinkie's just better at it.

OTOH, if you go for the "Pinkie Pie is a 4th wall breaking/bending eldrich abomination in Pony form", then the more exotic explanations start being more plausible.
Dusty the Royal Janitor 21st Jan 2014, 9:15 AM edit delete reply
I always assumed that it was how her earth pony magic manifested. While most earth ponies are 'attuned to the earth' in the sense that they are great with growing things or such, Pinkie Pie's earth pony magic attunes her to the earth in the sense that she is subconsciously aware of all of her surroundings through the earth. Basically, her magic makes her hypersensitive to her environment and she subconsciously senses all of the tiny vibrations, air currents, scents, temperature changes, electrical impulses, and so on and so forth in the air and through the earth for miles around and when something important is going to happen in her immediate vicinity, it sets the pinkie sense off.

For the examples in the episode, she sensed moving air currents when she realized the frog was going to fall, sensed the vibrations of Twilight's hooves when she was about to fall in the ditch, perceived the mud puddle and the vibrations of the approaching cart when twilight was about to need a bath, smelled the pollen on the bees when the bees were approaching, etcetera etcetera.

Her earth pony magic allows her to perceive and sort all of this minute information and do so subconsciously and automatically, as easily as you and I breathe and blink, so she doesn't go COMPLETELY mad. The only way it consciously manifests is in the twitches, which she had to consciously match to every event over time.

I don't believe the pinkie senses are clairvoyance, mainly due to the fact that her predictions aren't clear. What my theory is is that that her senses are really strong precognition. She knows when certain types of events will happen, but not precise details. Precognitive abilities are possible in both a mundane and a mystical sense, however, with Pinkie's prediction of a "doozy" happening at froggy bottom bog, I suspect the psychic variant.
Kitty Girl Hazel 21st Jan 2014, 9:54 AM edit delete reply
Personally, I think it's that "attuned to the earth" thing gone a bit weird. Most Earth Ponies are attuned to a particular part of the earth - AJ is good with farmland and plants, for example. Pinkie Pie, however, is attuned to the fabric of space-time itself. It's nothing major - she can't interact with it at all - but sometimes she'll notice that something is about to happen and have a clue where it'll be.

Why does this happen? She could have Unicorn ancestry, or she could just be a fluke of pony genetics. Either way, the answer is "Pinkie Pie" at its core.
Zeeth 21st Jan 2014, 2:27 PM edit delete reply
Being an empath myself, I go with the psychic empath theory. When Pinkie's in an unhappy environment, she's miserable, but when she's surrounded with happy ponies she's happy. On top of that, her twitches are basically random, but she's able to interpret them accurately, and she has an excellent sense of who exactly needs cheering up, even if she's hard to convince that they'll respond to her party-party-party personality. The hardest part of this is "Party of One", though, but that's explainable: Pinkie knows they're hiding something, and her friends aren't in the habit of hiding things, so this makes her anxious -- and that anxiety then promotes doubt, which gets in the way of figuring out that it's something happy for her. So instead she loses touch with herself and bad things start to happen. Once the twisted belief is straightened out, Pinkie opens up again and all is well in her world.
Digo 21st Jan 2014, 10:01 AM edit delete reply
I just thought of another theory: What if Pinkie had "Merlin's Curse"? The one where she lives her live backwards. Thus, she knows of events to come because she's already experienced them. She makes a huge deal over meeting ponies for the first time because the reality is she knows it's the last time she'll see them from her own perspective.

Wow. That...that makes a great deal of sense, and is...really sad.

But...that means when her friends have to say goodbye for her for the last time - for whatever reason - she'll probably break their hearts by asking, "Who are you?"

...no wonder Merlin was a hermit...

I like the theory that what Pinkie has isn't a pony power. I don't think it's any variant of Earth pony powers, since the Princesses don't seem to have it, but it could be some manner of Changeling ability, or an ability from some other race entirely.

I figure she's the living avatar of a strongly Good and overwhelmingly Chaotic metaphysical concept, and Pinkie Sense is akin to a domain power or some other class feature. (3.5's Conduit of the Lower Planes from the 3rd-party Tome of Fiends is very adaptable to different concepts.)
jaconok 21st Jan 2014, 11:49 PM edit delete reply
I think it's because Pinkie is subconsciously a reality bender.
The first time she has a specific twitch it is not connected to anything, but if she declares that it is connected to something, it is and always will be, so whenever she gets that twitch, it happens.
Once upon a time something fell, and Pinkie's tail twitched, these two things happening so close to each other was entirely a coincidence, but pinkie was convinced it was not, and because she wanted there to be a connection between her twitches and something happening, subconsciously every time she twitches, if that twitch is linked to something in Pinkie's mind, that something happens.
It makes sense with "X emergency" too.
If Pinkie really wants to have something, and her subconscious mind determines that it won't do too much harm to her conscious mind, she suddenly remembers that she just happens to have hid that something all over town including right here where it is convenient.

Anxiety disorder? Sounds like Pinkie Pie to me. Seriously, going all nutzo-crazo with paranoia when her friends were planning a surprise party for her and thinking they were all going behind her back because they didn't like her parties and didn't want to be her friends anymore so she started to lose her sanity and talking to inanimate objects because the only way she validates her existence is through making her friends smile and if she can't do that then SHE HAS FAILED AND WHAT GOOD IS SHE SHE HAS EVERY REASON TO FEEL MISERABLE FOR BEING A TERRIBLE PONY at least that's the way she sees it because she is incredibly socially dependent and insecure about herself and what is that but a sign of crippling anxiety over the possibility of social failure it's like the one thing that means anything to her it means EVERYTHING to her!

Celestia that hurt to write like Pinkie's stream-of-consciousness. I can see why writing as PPPM hurts Newbiespud's brain.
