I said it before, and I'll say it again: Happy Boxing Day, everyone.

"Gygax give me strength," was great. The author's comment is making me wonder how much of a strain writing for Pinkie as DM , rather than the usual DM as DM, is. Is it for the best that there was no attempt to also write DM as player here?
FLZ 26th Dec 2013, 6:12 AM edit delete reply
I think it's for the best, yeah. The DM doesn't have... Doesn't have a character.* They serve as the voice of reason, the solid and consistent sense-making person. I'm sure they'd be a great roleplayer, and probably could take on RD... But to make it really work there would have to be a lot of snark about how haphazard Pinkie is being. It would take from the story.

* For lack of any sort of better phrasing
JustMyBassCannon 26th Dec 2013, 8:10 AM edit delete reply
Doesn't have a character*

*They have all the characters (and logical reasoning) that the players don't have.

Haha, love that Fluttershy image for the first panel. :D

My players tended to relish combat, so I made it a point that every session must have at least one decent fight. Often they'd have around 3. On rare occasions I'll have a long combet that takes up most of the session (Though they're usually fun with lots of RPing and freeform instead of just dice rolling).

Once again, Pinkie vs. sanity, and Pinkie's winning.
Poll time:
Now we know how Pinkie does as DM.
But what the rest of the mane 6?
Me; the only one I know is Dash would put battle after battle, no rest.
FLZ 26th Dec 2013, 6:21 AM edit delete reply
Twilight Sparkle would make the Tomb of Horrors.

And constantly be *facehoof*-ing, hard, at Dash playing it.
Digo 26th Dec 2013, 6:25 AM edit delete reply
AJ's player seems to have enough understanding to run a pretty decent straightforward adventure. Rarity's player sounds to me like she'd have some fun RPing and political thought in her adventure.
FanOfMostEverything 26th Dec 2013, 6:35 AM edit delete reply
Fluttershy would have a bucolic, RP-rich setting with few to no fights. At least, that would be her intention. Dash would find a way to kick rears and take names. Possibly through bear wrestling.
Joe the Rat 26th Dec 2013, 9:51 AM edit delete reply
Fluttershy as PM... that's a tough one. I think she'd probably have a rich an nuanced world, rife with drama, and questions, and easy battles interspersed with truly frightening monsters...

But the other players would miss this as they run roughshod over her quiet demeanor, right up until she snaps and everyone gets eaten by a rabbit themed demon.
Digo 26th Dec 2013, 11:12 AM edit delete reply
I don't personally see Fluttershy's player as being able to run a game.

Rarity would have a ton of roleplaying situations, and basically no combat unless the players really went out of their way to get it. When the combat happened though, there would probably be a real chance of death, because you need to really annoy people to get it. That isn't to say there isn't a real chance of death outside of conflict, because this would still be an exceptionally dangerous campaign, just in unusual ways.

AJ would probably run a relatively standard but also fun campaign. Not too much changed from a setbook, but would be a good DM once the game began.

Twilight would make things complicated, and would probably have half the puzzles be physics related, or have planned out relatively obscure solutions to puzzles. Rainbow Dash would then blow up everything and still come out alive, much to Twilight's frustration.

Dash would have monster after monster, only it would be hardcore combat as opposed to this silly version Pinkie is running.

Flutters... I'm not sure about Flutters. She would have great concepts and a great universe, but would have trouble containing the players. She would probably end up doing a lot of improvising, not by choice, but by not wanting to give the players rails to follow.
sjosten 26th Dec 2013, 11:44 PM edit delete reply
Twilight would have an incredibly complicated adventure that no one would get unless they followed literally every lead they were given. Even the combat would be just an excuse to give the players more info for the plot that they would inevitably miss.

Applejack would run the players through a few disconnected adventures and dungeons. It would be fun, and there would be a little bit of plot, but it would be more about hanging around and going through a few stories than unearthing some huge campaign.

Fluttershy would buy dungeon modules, allowing her to run a semi-smooth game without having to overthink everything.*

Dash would, of course, have a combat heavy campaign. However, it would have a plot too. Most likely something like the Mandalorian great hunt, or the arena system from the various Elder Scrolls games.

Rarity would run a cataclysmically detailed game. However, she wouldn't be as obvious about it as Twilight. Rarity would push the players through subtle hints in places she was reasonably sure they would pick up: i.e. causing Dash to start a bar fight so they get arrested, or having some guy mention something vaguely lore-ish so Twilight talks to him.

* Her rendition of Dungeonland is not only hilarious, but altered so that the animal-esque characters are less Always Chaotic Evil, allowing the players to not have to kill them.

There's a meme face I think belongs with this comment, but I won't use it.

Anyway; Twilight would be a bit like the gm from Darths and Droids, just she wouldn't take it that well. She would spend months preparing her game, three pages of history and stats on each character, intricate puzzles and storylines and every possible situation worked out. The players would obviously find the one path she missed within the first 8 seconds and completely ruin her hard work. Her brain would break and someone else would have to take over as she feels what it's like to be on the other side of a derailment.

Applejack seems like she's been on both sides of the screen. She also seems like she knows most of the other girls, so she would probably have a fairly "standard" adventure planned, but with traps and enemies designed specifically to beat her players. She would switch between sympathetic and sadistic depending on the player, probably taking great pleasure in watching Rainbow struggle with a trap she couldn't smash (Or a smashable trap that she can't get to smash), and take pity on one of the others having trouble.

Rainbow would probably have all action, with as little role playing as possible. If she can get away with it, she'll have three sentences of narration to bring them into the headquarters of the bad guy, which is full of room after room of combat, with the occasional 'dodge or damage' trap. She would be about 'winning' and any game with her behind the screen would be a one shot, or at least short term, since she doesn't want to have a good fight, she wants to -win- a good fight.

I don't see Rarity running your normal D&D game. However, I do see her running Shadowrun, with her adventure more about sneaking around, political intrigue, and verbal combat. Her plots probably run even deeper than Twilight's adventure, but she has plenty of threads to pick off of, and is more than capable of adapting her plans when necessary. Combat would be sparse, but fierce when it appears. Like Rainbow, she'd probably want to win, but would be less focused on it. For her, winning is watching them run in confused circles as they try to untangle the Christmas Tree Light Cord that is her adventure.

I can't see Fluttershy on the DM's side, regardless of the game. Except maybe Bunnies & Burrows (and even then...). Pinkie and Rainbow would barrel right over any plan she could possibly have and basically starting to run the table. AJ and Rarity would probably try and defend her from Pinkie and Rainbow, to the point that they accidentally start doing it themselves. I also see her being too attached to any of the monsters to want them to die in combat.

Mental image of Fluttershy dropping the Tarrasque into the campaign WAY early, leading to the group panicking about the combat they're no way ready for...

FS: Why would you want to fight this adorable little guy?
TS: He's not adorable and little!
AJ: He's vicious!
RD: And large!
FS: But doesn't the miniature look like he just wants to give you a big hug?
PP: ...ya know, it kinda does.
R: ...this is going to be a very strange campaign, isn't it?

I think Pinkie is trying to have this be a chaotic Nuetral campaign. (Lord knows I know what that's like especially with 4 outta 6 people being of that align. The lawfuls never stood a chance.

Also "Gygax give me strength" great line made me chuckle.

Dangit, Pinkie Pie, stop driving people to insanity! I know you're an eldritch being and all and that's kind of your gig, but they won't be able to genuinely laugh or smile if they're nuts; it'll all be automatic and hollow, like a smile painted on a rock.

Lol, I'm also writing a novel with Pinkie Pie in it right now, and in the part she appeared in so far, I tried to plan it out, but really there's no great way to plan a Pinkie Pie scene. If she wants to do something, that thing happens, regardless of whether it fits in to your overall plot. I think you're doing great. I like how the characters are both incredibly concerned about the direction of how things are going, but then also having fun anyway, the same way I probably would be with a DM like this. :)
FLZ 26th Dec 2013, 6:29 PM edit delete reply
Sounds like you know what you're doing! It takes a great writer to bring a character's mind into their own - let alone someone else's character, and one as unknowable as Pinkie.

Ok, I hate to harp on this, but... oh wait nevermind I love to harp on this. How the heck can pinky predict this stuff? Now she can predict stampedes? She can predict that a large group of poneys will run? Thats just vauge. It might not even be bad. It might be the city gaurd charging down a lone enemy (who isn't falling from the sky or causing other things to do so)(who isn't BIG)(who isn't causing splashes, opening doors or being interisting)(isn't coming from the forest)(and probably hundereds of other things)(and yes I did go back and look at all the things that the pinky sense has been shown to sense as of yet), or it might be a quick moving parade (that also doesn't do any of those other things). Now pinkie's just jumping to conclusions.

Of course everyponey knows that its somthing bad. Obviously. I haven't seen this episode, so my guess it that it will be a swarm of flaming weasles coming down from the mountains that is causing the stampede.
sjosten 26th Dec 2013, 11:47 PM edit delete reply
That would have been the coolest episode ever. The only issue is, what moral can be learned from flaming weasels?
Digo 27th Dec 2013, 5:19 AM edit delete reply
That "Weasel Stomping Day" was actually a campaign to prevent forest fires?
HappyMuffin 27th Dec 2013, 5:23 PM edit delete reply
That reminds me of a joke. Nothing to do with weasels but it is vaugely related to forest fires.

Once appon a time, There was a florest named Joe. The florest lived in a small town where he was the only one who the villagers bought from. But then one day the local church decided that they would sell flowers as well.

Now this was bad for the florest. More people would buy from the church than from him and this job was his livelyhood. So Joe went down to the church and asked them to stop selling the flowers. He politely explained his predicament. The priests apolegised but said that to many people liked their flowers for them to stop and that they were sure that everything would turn out ok.

After a week of losing buisness to the church, Joe went back to the church and asked again for them to stop selling their flowers, explaining that he haden't sold many flowers at all and that his buisness was all he had. But the clergy men still refused.

Well Joe was sick of this, so he called up his friend Hue to "talk" to the church for him. After Hue was finished "talking" with them, the battered clergy was very willing to stop selling their flowers.

The moral of this story is that Hue and only Hue can prevent florest friars.

Newbie: Alright, so we took a detour with the Timberwolves, but now we need to get back on track. Twilight's going to start testing exactly how the Pinkie Sense works and-
PP: Nope, stampede.
Newbie: Wait, what? Look, Fluttershy wasn't even really part of the Timberwolves episode anyway, we can't just jump to random episodes at will.
PP: But she *is* part of the next scene. It's from "Applebuck Season", where Fluttershy and Applejack are trying to round up the bunnies.
Newbie: ...Oh, I had forgotten about that. But shouldn't we try to go back to-
PP: Nope, stampede, then hydra. Unless I think of something else. Ooh, how about a party scene in between? I'm sure there's more shots of AJ, FS, TS, and PP in those.
Newbie: But...do you know how many parties you've thrown in all three seasons? It'll take days to go through them all!
PP: Well, then, I guess you better get started!
