I know the die has been cast regarding where this arc is going, but let me draw your attention to this video.

It's a live improv reading of the first 100 pages of the comic, complete with impressions of all the characters' voices, done in one sitting, by one person, in just over an hour.

The reason I love this video - and the reason I'm devoting an entire Author's Note to it - is because it gave me a fresh perspective on those 100 pages. I wrote those pages almost two years ago - I've read them over and over again since. But watching this video made me feel like a complete stranger experiencing the comic for the first time. And it convinced me, "Hey, all these readers aren't crazy after all. I haven't duped anyone. Some of this is actually pretty good."

So, I'd just like to say: Thank you very much, Bev, for the wonderful experience and for the hour of your day you put into it. :)

Derpmind 23rd Mar 2013, 6:33 AM edit delete reply
Uh, yeah. A big part of the fun's how the characters in the comic reflect the characters in the show, and another big part is seeing the screencaps do funny things to what we remember from the episodes. You're totally doing yourself a disservice by not watching at least some of the first season.

...Well, Hirou I must admit your perspective is the exception rather than the rule around here, or for most campaign comics. Most readers of campaign comics are well aware of the source material, and can guess in advance how the plot will go, or what events they REALLY look forward to seeing portrayed.

You, on the other hand, don't know what to expect either way...and that's unique. While I personally enjoy seeing how my expectations for the comic will be handled (or subverted), you can keep up a sense of suspense and surprise by not even knowing what's "supposed" to happen (the two foot ravine and "rocks fall, everypony dies" come to mind).

Hirou, if you feel that you would enjoy this comic more without being "spoiled", more power to you...although, viewer beware if you go browsing the comments.

I wasn't saying Hirou was doing anything wrong. I was just saying that, in my opinion, he is missing out by not watching the show. I mostly just wanted to get across that I don't think he should feel like he shouldn't watch the show just so he can enjoy this comic. It's his choice, obviously, and either way works. Just giving my opinion.
Kaze Koichi 23rd Mar 2013, 9:16 AM edit delete reply
Hirou, I think you are doing a right thing. This way you can enjoy this comic on a different level compared to those that watch MLP and know what's coming. And nothing prevents you from watching a show after reading corresponding story here, if you have such desire.
Kayeka 23rd Mar 2013, 7:19 PM edit delete reply
Screencap comics comics are a bit of a fandom-injoke though, so I think you are missing out on something.

I mean, the entire point is experiencing the story step-by-step with a different context, perspective and tone, with the occasional curve ball in the form of "derailment". "knowing" what's going to happen is more or less the heart of the experience.

But now I'm realising that I've just wasted two minutes typing a message to tell you that you are having fun wrong. Go ahead, whatever floats your boat, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I'm just saying that you can still enjoy this comic after watching at least season one, which comes with the added bonus of having seen the first season of a good television show.

I think it's perfectly fine not knowing what is coming up. You are literally getting all your information from a comic that doesn't necessarily follow the shows script. That means you never get an "I was so off in how I saw this going" moment... or do you prefer that?
Tatsurou 25th Mar 2013, 11:41 AM edit delete reply
Seeing as you are probably the only one doing so and 'normal' is defined by the average behavior of the group, as a deviation thereof, this is most definately 'abnormal.'

CJT 24th Mar 2013, 12:12 AM edit delete reply
I'd figured that as well, which means the DM is abandoning any further interaction with Celestia for this session.

Twilight's player might have wanted that to better sound out the mentor/student relationship and potential future resources they might have backing them, and Rarity's player will probably be disappointed that she can't butter up the God-Queen in-session.

On the other hand, Dash's player will probably be quite happy to skip the diplomacy and head straight to a combat adventure.

I suppose we'll see soon enough how the DM handles the transition.
Digo 24th Mar 2013, 8:26 AM edit delete reply
Well, he/she could do what our current GM does and skips transitioning. Just throws everything at us at the same time, making a huge clusterbuck out of the entire campaign.

I like where this is going. I could see Rarity striking a deal with the diamond dogs. She marks the gems, and they dig, and they split the gems 50/50.

Also, I have finished the first chapter of Celes Tsu's The Art of War. It's like I'm defacing a work of art.

I would like to take this moment to invite you all to donate money for a new charity I'll be starting, as soon as the government approves it as such. I call it Moustaches for Monas. Every cent donated goes toward restoring classic works of art to their pristine, moustachioed prime, as they were always meant to be.

Hmm... Mayhaps it needs another once over. There's a part of me, deep, deep down, that's really good at messing with this stuff. She lies sleeping, and I need to awaken her. There is only one way to do that. I need to stop sleeping, drink that vanilla extract in the cabinet, and set my Weird Al playlist to shuffle. She's a crazy bird, but she will always live on in my appendix.

No. Why would I let her live in my heart? A heart is a terrible place to live! It's damp and moist, and the lighting is terrible!

"We'll see what happens."

If ever there was a sentence that defined my DM style, it is that one. My group is just too dang unpredictable and derives far too much enjoyment out of smelting rails for me to do anything but fly by the seat of my pants and see where their impulses take the story. Fortunately, I enjoy it.

Still, I have to sympathize with FiD-DM. Nothing feels quite as bad as having your awesome, player-challenging, character-building, world-threatening scenario dismantled in a matter of moments. Especially when it's done not through cheese, but just a character doing what s/he's supposed to do.

I just want to put my two cents in here, but Rainbow Dash and AJ are such douchebags to the GM of this comic sometimes. Reading this last panel, I wanted to reach into cartoon land and slap them upside the heads.

OMG! GIVE THE FLIPPIN' GM A BREAK! SHEESH! IT'S NOT LIKE HE'S GOT THE HARDEST JOB IN THE FREAKIN' RP GROUP! ALL YOU SORRY EXCUSES FOR PCS HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP ON TIME EACH WEEKEND - IF THAT! THE GM'S JOB HAS SO MUCH MORE WORK INVOLVED WITH IT! WRITING UP THE ADVENTURE, MAKING BACK-UP PLANS FOR WHEN HIS ORIGINAL PLANS GET TOSSED TO THE CURB, COMING UP WITH MONSTER AND NPC STATS, TRAPS, PUZZLES, RIDDLES, ETC. ETC. ETC - EVERY WEEK!!! WHILE ALSO BALANCING MORE IMPORTANT, BUT NOT NEARLY AS FUN, REAL-LIFE STUFF IN THERE TOO!

-So remember guys, go easy on your GMs (;

Though, while I'm still in the ranting mood, I will also mention that the GM of this strip gave up way too easily with the Parasprite thing. He could've had Twilight have to make a willpower check just to strike the Parasprites because of their overpowering cuteness, or he could've made there be more than just the one bug Fluttershy brought in - thus slaughtering the initial 3 wouldn't have completely put an end to the adventure.

I guess I'm just venting at how annoying these characters are some time, but I do like this comic (:
Malik 23rd Mar 2013, 9:55 AM edit delete reply
I can certainly agree that the Players in this campaign are often unappreciative twats. The DM's problem, though, is that they're totally new.

The players have a variety of levels of experience, but I believe it was mentioned that this is new territory for the DM. New enough to just be learning the cardinal rule of DMing; Never let them see you Sweat.

No matter how far the players go off of the planned rails, the important thing is that the players never know just how ill- or well-prepared you are for their actions. So long as the DM can keep calm and carry on the story progresses smoothly, whether that means transitioning the story into another plotline or implementing a way for the original plan to continue uninterrupted.

Re: "Rainbow Dash and AJ are such douchebags. . . "

RD might be; but AJ's player has been shown before to have deep understanding of this DM, especially in the Dragon adventure where AJ's player was the one to ask the DM how he/she was doing, and was the one to go give the DM a pep talk. (Rarity's player even urged AJ's player to go talk with the DM; so RY's player must have known they were close.)

This DM might be meant to represent a younger sibling of AJ's player, or some other relationship (friend from infancy? pupil? cousin? lover? child?) that gives one person special insight into another.
CJT 25th Mar 2013, 9:38 AM edit delete reply
I have a sibling. After a few decades, we've moved up to "tolerating each other".

My money is on "significant other or long-term friend". My headcanon presently has AJ as one of the few actual females in the group, and the DM's SO.

The Livestream was delightful. Nice work on the voices, and the side commentary was amusing too. The substitution for dice as a sound effect borders on brilliant, especially for having been improvised on the spot. The whole thing represents the comic very well.

There was one time only half of my group showed up when they were going to be going against the boss (they didn't know). I ended up having the ones who did show up go on a wild goose chase looking for the wizard that turned a man's wife into a pig. It turned out the man just randomly put a dress on his pig.

Personally, I applaud the GM here. Learning how to improvise is one of the skills of a good GM. I've gotten to where I don't really plan too much anymore. I mean, when I'm going in to a new adventure, I plan out the hook and try to come up with some NPCs and antagonists and things, but after that I just let it evolve and try to be consistent in my portrayal of NPCs.
WuseMajor 23rd Mar 2013, 8:11 PM edit delete reply
For example, in the situation this GM is in, I would have either had some other pony pick up a Parasprite or, given the nature of the comic, had the Princess bring her pet bird along.

Tatsurou 25th Mar 2013, 11:54 AM edit delete reply
I don't know what 'story time' this would fall under, but I felt compelled to share it.

I was a rogue in one campaign. On one mission, we needed to get an artifact from the BBEG's home base for...I can't remember what. I decided I should break in solo and steal it.
Failed a stealth check, and was being chased by a squad of the BBEG's Elite Guard. I was about five levels underleveled if the entire group had been there, let alone solo. I was running for it, with the guard hot on my heels.
I came to a steep cliffside. The DM figured I was cornered and dead. My entire party was preparing to either Res me or have me roll up a new character.
With no other options, I turned to face the guard, pointed out beyond the edge of the cliff, and said with all the conviction I could muster, "I went that way!"

The DM had a rather unique bonus feat houseruled he called 'The Power of Laughter'. Basically, we got a bonus to rolls if our action was hilarious...and penalties if it got booed. By the time we got around to rolling, I had a +7 to my bluff check.
I nat'20ed it.

The BBEG's Elite Guard squadron charged over the edge of the cliff like lemmings, pursuing the target. DM rolled for damage. The entire squadron died from the fall.

When everyone finished laughing at it...

Me: So...I get XP for that, right?

I think I went up like, 5 levels for that.

Twilight sounds like me when I was playing in one of my fiance's first DMing sessions.

I felt really, really bad for what happened, but essentially what it was was this: My character [for some reason I made Patchouli Knowledge] and the party were witness to a scene taking place on a rooftop, where an NPC was slowly being approached by what turned out to be a major antagonist. Or perhaps the scene itself hadn't started yet... at any rate, we rush to the top of the building, where we witnessed the antagonist covered in blood, the body of the NPC below him. He was standing near the edge and turned, presumably to taunt us. I asked the DM if the experience cap was a thing in this game. After some explanation, he said no.

So I rolled to bull rush him.

Long story short, he critically failed his Balance check, fell off the building and broke his neck. He didn't have a sheet up at the time, I believe, but he was meant to be a level 20 character. I estimated experience and we all grew 10 levels in one non-fight.

Later on in the same game, I kinda kept doing it. Like the time I used a spell from one of my Seven Veils to Gust of Wind someone out of an airship. I think I killed one or two other antagonists... there was a demon or something that was also in the airship, and a high-level NPC was having a show fight with him. When the demon went to leave, I used Dimensional Anchor, and the NPC killed it.

The campaign didn't end well, though. I( think we accidentally skipped most of the plot and didn't have any idea how to turn off the demon-spanwing-gate-thingie, so we... I think someone may have cast something to stop time in the area. Well, at the time I made a Drakengard reference and just called it the D ending.
