There's a certain aspect of DMing that makes you want to go, "Dance, players, dance for my amusement! Mwahahahahaaa!" (Un)Fortunately, players are pretty much trained from the get-go to watch out for such behavior, so it's never as easy as it seems.

Indeed, making the players actually dance, dance for your enjoyment without realizing it takes a lot of work and is the subject of much discussion in the tabletop RPG community.

I actually have a hat just for this kind of thing. It's a pimp hat made of purple velvet, with a band of leopard print felt around it. It is so gay and flamboyant I have nicknamed it Elton John.

I don't know what you're talking about, spud. My group has always been will to dance along with the GM when it was set for primo entertainment~

My friend Shawn runs an occasional Paranoia oneshot for us, and it always starts of the same: We are lodged together, we start our morning with breakfast and morning exercises... which we hafta enact or The Computer will think something's wrong.... It was great fun doing it at a con this year, when only me and two others knew what to expect, while 6 new guys watched us in confusion as we stood up and did jumping jacks by our chairs~

I mean that in a praiseworthy sense, Raxon, much as referring to Capablanca as "the Chess Machine" was intended to be complimentary.

Technically speaking, they sell semi-auto tommies. It's entirely reasonable that you could hunt deer with them.

It's just making them full auto that's illegal.

But you can buy a license to own a full auto machine gun. A class III license allows you to own fully automatic weapons. You need to pay several hundred bucks, but it's cool.

It has to be manufactured before 1985 though I think. It's MUCH more difficult to legally own a recently manufactured automatic weapon.

Reminds me of this one magic item our DM gave us. It was a teddy bear that acted as a slotless cloak of resistance +1, but to make it work, the bearer had to hold an actual, sparkly teddy bear.
It backfired stupendously when the barbarian's player eagerly embraced the thing. The DM eventually had to summon up an NPC to take it away.

You know, you can actually injure your voice by constantly speaking outside your range. It happened to me this one time. A blow to the genitals was involved.

I was only in pain for about 10 minutes, but I thought it would be funny.

mine was more of speaking in a higher pitched yet more gravelly voice but missing 3 days of work (I worked phones) with a Doctor's note of 'strained vocal cords' was... unusual. (also, no PTO).

When I roleplay female characters, I generally try to up the pitch in my voice, but yeah, it's painful after a while so I don't move my range too much.

I do often work in the physical gestures and movements of a female character. Hilarious when I creeped out my wife one time with how much attention I put into it. XD

That's brilliant, Digo. I shall have to look into that. Right now, I usually just try to channel from the June Foray playlist when I'm expected to play a woman. I gave the pirate captain in Talon of Umberlee my best Witch Hazel, while her first mate got Natasha.

Naturally, I tried to channel Boris Badenov for the main villain in the adventure's second half.

I do a poor Boris, but attempting it does help bring out the character anyway.

Last season, I attempted to play the wizard and his apprentice in Kill the Wizard as Cave Johnson and GLaDOS. Since I haven't played the games, I never did get a handle on that. A cross between guest lecturer and weapon demonstrator in a bad B sci-fi film worked out much better for the wizard.

Come to think of it, Boris Badenov could also have worked for him. Huh.

Right now my players are in a D&D adventure exploring an ancient ruin with two spirits that oversee the place. One acts like Pinkie Pie and wants the Players to play a game and find the treasure, the other like Pinkemena who hates the players and demands they leave before she calls the denezins of the dungeon to eat the party.

Trying to switch between two whiplash personalities has given me a slight headache XD

I've basically perfected the whiplash persona. I literally whip myself alive violently, usually spinning in place, before stopping with either a manic, deranged look, or a sedate but cheerful look. The first time I did that, one kid my friends who had known me longer scooted away from the table because he knew what kind of crazy was coming.

Unless the method acting involves the players getting to wield Nerf weaponry, they don't. And I disdain when they wield Nerf weaponry because they insist on keeping them loaded, but don't follow proper gun safety etiquette.
So I had to actually set up gun control laws for Nerf weapons at my table.

That's sad. :p

I used to have two players in my group that were part of an improv show they did monthly, so they both LOVED to RP out situations. One time they LARP'd out an actual in-character argument complete with slamming doors, fumming, and making up afterwards over booze.

Now THAT is dedication to the craft.

Low grade silicone rubber, as well as pvc, melts when you microwave it. It won't be floppy, per se, but it will wilt and bend.

Then you need some water colors, and boom! Success!

Also, an orca dildo is what you would probably want. Go ahead and google that. I dare you.

I've used silicone rubber for pewter casting. It'll survive a far higher temperature that just about any other plastic (others usually degrade around 60-120 C, silicone is good to about 200-230 C).

Microwaving it is a Bad Idea, though, because if any of it _does_ get hot enough to melt, it'll also be hot enough to release very-un-fun chemicals (objects in microwaves are _not_ heated uniformly; if nothing else, the inside will be much hotter than the outside).

Watercolours will also probably not work for pigmentation. The whole point of using silicone for mold-making is that almost nothing bonds to it (so you don't need release agents). There are silicone-specific dyes that you have to buy to mix with the precursors when making the stuff, if you want it coloured.

The one thing that _does_ stick to silicone is silicone itself. If you really must put blue polka dots on an adult novelty object, go to your local craft store and buy that blue silicone putty that's sold under a few different trade names. That will probably bond strongly to your toy.

In order to get a special feat for a martial arts using character, our DM made us demonstrate we knew what we were doing... It was hilarious, and thanks to a summer of Jujitsu, I was able to get the feat.

And sometimes when I play with a certain DM, whenever he has to be a woman NPC, he puts on a lovely cloche hat.

One of my favorite things to do is put my players in a position where they can't communicate via speech or writing and have them charade to each other.

Especially fun when they're under a severe time limit.

One of my NPCs did that to a player that became a god once. Ian's character might have become the god of Order and Civilization, but when Torrin Silverfern (the level 5 merchant) screwed them over - the party needed to beg for help from the ruler of the far realm. It was Binky, a gnome that had turned the far realm (the realm of madness and cthulu-like creatures) into the "Fun Realm" - with his personal assistant a talking, pink party-obsessed pony.

Binky and Pinky agreed to help with Ian's request that would free his character to wreak vengeance upon Torrin... But the rulers of the Fun Realm didn't like all that order and civiliztion Ian was a part of. They insisted that he show his fun side and sing a song.

Ian, the shy accounting major, was forced to sing Hakuna Matata in real life, to the youtube karaoke version if he wanted to use his level 30 god-character.

Luckily, I didn't let any of the other players record it. But boy is it a fond memory.

Absolutely Zuche. That was almost too much for Ian, and a DM's job is to make sure the players have an amazing experience. If I was doing something too embarrassing to him, it would have been a negative experience and that's not what I want to give my players.

heh, I love Torrin even more the more I hear about him. I really want to be a DM sometime. How much experience do you think you should need to have playing before you would feel comfortable DMing? My guess is that it's a lot more than I've done (only played one campaign so far that took a semester), but it was really fun and I have so many ideas I want to create into a game.
Also, if I ever do DM a game, I have a custom universe I've been developing, but It doesn't really fit with any D+D system. Does anyone want to help me create something similar to a Star Wars/Avatar the last Airbender D+D crossover system?

You can DM without any experience at all, so you definitely have enough. I recommend just watching The Adventure Builder's Workshop and a few PAX Celebrity D&D Games. Chris Perkins is great and watching how he did things with those videos gave me the basis for DMing. He also writes a great free article series called "The Dungeon Master Experience".

As for the crossover system, why not try out Living Legends? It's adapted from the Pony Tales system we designed and is specifically made to work for any flavor in any campaign setting. We've used it for classic D&D worlds, a crazy future/fantasy mix that involves elven archmages in megazords fighting Rodian pokemon trainers and other such bizarre twists and, of course, my little pony. It's worked great for all that and more.

Here's a link to the Living Legends material if you're interested. It even has a huge tabletop combat system in addition to the voice chat stuff.

Building a game system from scratch is usually difficult enough to not be worth it if there are alternatives (playtesting takes forever for a good reason). As Stairc points out, there are generic systems around (with varying levels of complexity). You might also be able to find a copy of the d6 Star Wars rulebooks in a used game shop (there was a d20 version, but my experiences with that were mediocre).

For playing experience, the first main thing is to have a very solid grasp of the rules of the system you're running (both how they're normally used and how they might be exploited). The second main thing is to have a good feel for how groups of roleplayers work (and how your group in particular works, as this varies widely). If you pay careful attention to what other DMs have done that you enjoyed (and to what _didn't_ work), it'll help you a lot when it's your turn behind the DM screen.

The other thing to bear in mind is that running a game and building the material for a game are both very different skillsets from playing the game (and from each other), so make sure that both you and your players are prepared for a learning curve in this regard.

As long as you're with a group of people you're friends with and who support you, and you've made sure the campaign you have in mind is something your players are willing to play, and you have a well-tested set of rules that you know well, you'll have a lot of fun.

One of the biggest reason I think that I want to play in the universe I've developed for a while is that in my stories about this universe, there's a villain who I've tried very hard to kill off about 5 times before (because I thought he was getting too evil), and I've never succeeded to do it, even though I'm the only one controlling the stories I create. I kind of want to see if players can succeed where I've failed. :)

In that case, a word of warning: set goals that you can focus on and be attached to, but DO NOT build storylines that you like and give them to the players, because your precious work WILL NOT come out as intended. I had the same problem in my first few sessions as a DM (which are also my most recent sessions as a DM), where the characters ignored the drama that was taking place in the post-apocalyptic stronghold and went to parley with the thugs that were trying to extort from them. Once I got over my storyline, it was fun for everyone, but man, was I bitter for a while.

I'll second sunbeam's comment. If you're looking for a way to improve _your_ stories, I'd suggest finding a good editor. In a game, the PCs make their _own_ stories. Attempts to steer them on to a specific story path you're interested in usually come across as railroading.

You can introduce the villain to the campaign. You can even get the PCs dead-set on bringing the villain down, if you play your cards right. But they'll do it their way (usually a way you didn't expect, and often with ludicrous overkill, if past campaigns I've been in are any guide).

This can be a lot of fun, but only if it's what you actually want.

Think of the campaign as being an alternate-universe fanfic of your story, not something that's in the same canon.

(A word of warning about winding up players to go after the villain: Do this carefully. It has to be through things the players experience in-play, not just backstory. It has to be via the villain messing with things the PCs - and players - care about. But if you have the villain show up in person to mess with them, be prepared for the PCs to try to kill them on the spot. If they get a lucky roll, your villain dies before they're properly introduced. If you fudge rolls or give them unreasonable reasons for the villain not being attackable, this is "plot armour" - something most players hate. I'm sure the other gamers here can give you stories about what makes - or doesn't make - a memorable villain, so this is a very good thing to ask for advice about.)

Yes, Page-Mistress, yes it is :) I'm a michigan sports fan, and I love this picture that I found earlier. And, yeah, I'm already guessing there's no chance that a D+D version of my universe would progress the same way my version of my universe did. I was planning to make an alternate reality, but with all the initial conditions the same.
I suppose I've given this villain plot armor before, but only because he's so evil. In my universe he's died and gotten revived. He's been incinerated while inside subspace and come back more powerful than ever. He's survived getting attacked by millions of demons (after losing his abilities). He's created an intergalactic war to get the entire Milky Way Galaxy fleet off his tail (as a distraction). If it is this hard for me to kill him off I will have to be careful to make it not quite as hard for the players.

Comic-related story: In our Pony Team Bravo game, the DM had us do marine/sailor songs as part of a skill challenge, to get information from the patrons of a bar, and allowed us to get bonuses if we actually sing them (via Skype). I started singing first, choosing To The End of Our Days, getting a big bonus for matching the lyrics. Then our next singer crit-failed, so we needed at least one more good song to pass. One of us made a joke comment about singing the Spongebob Squarepants song. And then the DM decided to be evil, by having the patrons of the bar force us to sing their "favorite song": The song of the Spongebob.

Good thing we didn't record during those early sessions.

The Living Greyhawk mod, "Desecrators of the Lords' Tomb" included a trip through a maze that could only be managed by getting guidance from a ghost. To gain the help of the ghost, you must find his skeletal doggy. The only way the doggy will respond to your calls is if you sing.

And you must sing in character, out loud.

It's actually one of the best mods I've ever played, and one of the most memorable.

I sang "Boney" to the melody of "Mandy", and caused the DM to double facepalm when I finished!

It's STILL one of my favorite D&D memories to this day. :D

Whoo! I have a story to put forth! My first time DMing, it was a Harkenworld (or whatever it was called) campaign. The party's Tiefling rogue managed to get a 20 on an acrobatics check to jump through an old ladies window. Why? I can't remember (maybe no reason, her name was Random after-all). The shock of all this gave the elderly woman a heart attack. Now, I'm an actor, so at a loss for words of exactly how to describe whats happening,I clutch my chest and start freaking out, doing the best over-the-top heart-attack I could, which ended up with me hitting my head on the table, before falling to the ground, twitching.

At my camp the Dm had a rule. If you score a double critical hit, You must preform the attack with this ruler on this desk. we only lost 2 rulers that year.

This WOULD be the part where I talk about the demonic empowerment that made the PCs that took it have to be insanely chipper, but I think I blew that one already. Funniest part was when the NPC mage they work with immediately noticed something more wrong than usual with the necromancer, and then the party had to somehow convince him that everything was fine despite him almost instantly finding out she was covered head-to-toe in demonic magic...

While the necromancer, who is already axe-crazy to the point of CARRYING AROUND A SHARDMIND CORPSE ON A LEASH, goes on in a bright happy voice about how she's completely normal despite her personality pulling a complete 180.

The swordmage/wizard that had that buff didn't change much, since her player wasn't really good at roleplaying things that didn't involve the statement "I charge; twenty-[X] to hit." Still don't know what I was thinking when I thought she'd enjoy playing an Assassin. This was also the 4e, pre-shadow-supplement-confusing-as-all-hell version too.

I've noticed I need a new RP group. Every action the players made was to molest an NPC. That's not an exaggeration, by the way. "You're in a crowded street" They decide to molest a little boy, "You've arrived at the morgue" they decide to feel up the corpses. And that was as far as we got with anything.

Ah, I feel ya. We have a player who, at one point, downloaded sex dice and constantly used them. Last session I believe they were pleasuring them self behind a bush with the bone of their latest victim. It's come to the point we aren't surprised anymore, but thankfully we haven't reached the point of thinking its normal. Yet.

I was in a game last year based on being trapped in a variety of video games, and at one point we ended up in a sort of Mario-Party-ish puzzle game where we had to do the challenges ourselves. One of them was a human knot.

That one got amusing, since several of us were fairly short and one was quite tall (this was in a rather large group).

Without their realizing it? I suppose that would be hard. That's why I'm usually pretty upfront about it. It's more fun, though of course, I only use the line "Dance Monkeys Dance" on rare occasions, to keep it special.
