This comic follows in the wake of a hefty plug from Equestria Daily. My traffic graph is FREAKING OUT.

As for today's comic... If you're wondering why Twilight Sparkle is suspicious of Rarity, check the Cast page.

On this day, the traffic for this comic jumped from 4,905 pageviews and 697 unique visitors... to 266,190 pageviews and 15,500 unique visitors. This briefly put Friendship is Dragons on ComicFury's front-page "Popular Now" list.

Since then, the traffic has leveled out to between 19,000 and 25,000 pageviews a day - barring the occasional spike in views from new incoming links. Not enough to make ComicFury's front page, but still very, very impressive. Thanks, everybrony!

So I'm guessing it is somewhere along the lines of "Find Treasure," But on the other hand, she should additionally get a really nice bonus for armour-smithing.

I've roleplayed being lied to with a successful bluff check before. It's a skill to let somebody beat you with a bluff.

Aaah! Worst! Worst! Interspecies reverse pedophilia! ;)

Nice work with the dialogue, I could really hear their voices in my head.

Whaaaaaaat, you don't trust the character with rank 9 in Thievery AND whose of Evil alignment?

Thats just shallow minded thinking, that is.
McBehrer 24th Sep 2011, 7:34 PM edit delete reply
Well, the way it's SUPPOSED to work, player knowledge does not impact character knowledge. Just because WE (and Twilight's player) know Rarity is evil, that doesn't mean TWILIGHT does.
Travis 24th Sep 2011, 7:35 AM edit delete reply
Ah, I was kinda wondering why Dash and Rarity are Evil-aligned.
Anon 24th Sep 2011, 11:03 AM edit delete reply
The way I've always seen it is that evil isn't necessarily "bad". It just means putting yourself ahead of others or wanting to do something no matter the cost.
Namagem 24th Sep 2011, 2:55 PM edit delete reply
Dash is CHAOTIC EVIL. That's... Kinda unambiguous.
Keiya 24th Sep 2011, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
But they're the elements of *Loyalty* and *Generosity*! Furthermore, why the hell isn't Pinkie Pie CN or CG? I've *never* talked to someone running 4e with friends who didn't throw out the broken alignment system and use the AD&D/3e alignments. (Though the Magic: The Gathering setting port I'm doing (I'm not sure if I'm targeting 3e or 4e yet) is going to use WUBRG :P)

I love you guys and all your opinions. Makes running this kind of comic even more interesting!

The alignments on the cast page just don't make sense. I kinda wish they weren't there, and on a broader scale that the stupid "system" didn't even exist at all.
Nezumi 23rd Feb 2012, 11:59 AM edit delete reply
I'm... honestly not sure that the 4e alignment system is all that "broken." It folds True Neutral, Lawful Neutral, and Chaotic Neutral into Unaligned, Neutral Good and Chaotic Good into "Good", and Lawful Evil and Neutral Evil into "Evil." It doesn't have the diversity of the older system, but it's functional and simpler for new players.
Thiefenz 25th Sep 2011, 11:51 PM edit delete reply
actually that's Neutral, evil is putting yourself first even at the expense of others. neutral is putting yourself first within reason; a good character would go out of his way to save a companion or a citizen, a neutral character would go out of his way to save his companion but not for a random stranger. an evil person would go out of his way to save himself and leave the two dumbasses who got themselves in trouble
nemryn 24th Sep 2011, 8:19 AM edit delete reply
This is why a good GM makes a habit of occasionally rolling dice when she doesn't need to, or for no reason at all.

YOU'RE SUCH A HIPSTER, HONEY.

I didn't notice Spike while I was taking the screenshot, but I definitely noticed while arranging it in the comic. I decided it had to stay.
MangoFox 24th Sep 2011, 9:27 AM edit delete reply
In my last campaign, we had a Chaotic Neutral-Because-The-Class-Says-So character that was constantly concealing her past and her motives. Eventually, the DM just told us to "roll for bluff no matter what, because I can't even tell when you're bluffing or not anymore." I think RPGs always get a little more complicated when you start applying stats to intra-party roleplay.
BadHorse 24th Sep 2011, 9:34 AM edit delete reply
Covers for rogues are the best!
terrycloth 24th Sep 2011, 11:47 AM edit delete reply
That's what passive scores are for. Normally you'd have Rarity roll her bluff against Twilight's passive insight, but if she already rolled insight you could compare it to Rarity's passive bluff.
Namagem 24th Sep 2011, 2:57 PM edit delete reply
Actually, Since rarity isn't lying, it would be diplomacy to convince twi that she isn't.

(meant to post this on THIS post, not lindens, sorry.)
Newbiespud 24th Sep 2011, 3:35 PM edit delete reply
Newbiespud
But Rarity IS lying... or isn't she? Point is, whatever she rolls will practically TELL Twilight's player her intentions.

(Deleted the double comment for ya.)
Namagem 24th Sep 2011, 11:11 PM edit delete reply
Players, yes, but in a good group, not characters. I've actually seen it happen; it's rare as heck, but it happens.
Shikome Kido Mi 26th Sep 2011, 10:37 PM edit delete reply
That's why you keep your Diplomacy and Bluff (both charisma-based skills) at the same level and just roll without telling people which one it is.
Let the DM (silently) apply appropriate modifiers.
Maklak 13th Nov 2011, 5:20 AM edit delete reply
Just have Rarity take 10 on that roll no mater if she is lying or not.
terrycloth 25th Sep 2011, 9:12 AM edit delete reply
Oh, I always make people roll bluff to convince people they're not lying if they're saying something that sounds like a lie, whether or not it's true.

Diplomacy works differently.

But that wasn't the point -- if you compare it to the passive you don't have to roll *anything*.

When I play a rogue, I get into the habit of throwing a d20 every time I open my mouth. Eventually, the rest of the parties stops cting about whether I'm bluffing or not, as long I pass along SOME of the party loot to them.

I'm afraid that I'm pretty much in love with the whole idea of this comic. I mean, I'm a DM myself, I always was, and this? This is just too awesome. You have a great skill of getting in character of everypony, and it really shows. There wasn't one moment when I was thinking it was too over the top or fake. Maybe the lack of Applejack's accent was a little off, but you can pick it as a bad thing only if you REALLY can't find anything else to brag about. Great thing, dear sir!

So, wait. Are you actually running a D&D campaign in a pony theme, or just making this comic as if MLP were a D&D campaign

Google search for "DM of the Rings" or "Darths and Droids". Number one, they're hilarious. Number two, they're kind of the same sort of thing as this - someone taking a movie or show and adding captions so that it looks like the product of a D&D game.
pyrotwister 24th Sep 2011, 8:19 PM edit delete reply
Mind blown... I've seen this idea only once and it was a movie about Dnd so it made sense. This however is totally amazing!

Chaotic, Neutral, Lawful=Intense, Casual, Rigorous.

Good, Neutral, Evil=Selfless, Loyalist, Centered.

Granted, that means RD should be true neutral, but the closest equivalent alignment in 4E doesn't fit her. OH WELL.
Newbiespud 25th Sep 2011, 12:37 PM edit delete reply
Newbiespud
Good reading! And it actually vindicates my alignment choices.

Rainbow Dash from the show would definitely be True Neutral. Casual, Loyalist. But my Rainbow Dash's character (and by extension her player) is Intense and Centered. She attacked Twilight because she was FEELING BORED. Chaotic Evil!

Same for Rarity here. She's more of a Casual or Rigorous Centered character, being the social rogue. That fits 4e's spectrum of Evil (non-Chaotic).

Thanks, Masterweaver!
Shikome Kido Mi 26th Sep 2011, 10:26 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, I always found the D&D alignment system's naming conventions more annoying than the system.
I mean, it's pretty hard to sell your evil corruption to people as just making the necessary hard choices and not really evil when taking levels in the class you're offering gives "Smite Good".
I know the writers wanted good and evil as objective forces but the vast majority of evil people see everything they do as justified and wouldn't call their abilities evil, even if it detects as such. They'd claim those detection spells were misnamed.

I envy you for being able to see your traffic (">_<), but congrats on the huge spike in readers! ^_^

Alignments aren't set in stone. No idea how they'll be portrayed in this comic, but alignment changes make builds like expelled chaotic monk/barbarians possible. :p
EdgeOfOblivion 25th Sep 2011, 4:50 PM edit delete reply
Thank you so much for pointing this out. Every time I see "alignments are a straightjacket" comments and how the system needs to be thrown away completely it makes me want to strangle people because alignment shift and drift is a core part of the game, with countless exceptions and notations put there for when it comes up.

Heck, one D&D-based computer game - Neverwinter Nights and its expansions and sequel - had a points-based system where if you gained enough points in Good/Evil/Law/Chaos your alignment shifted one way or another.
Shikome Kido Mi 26th Sep 2011, 10:35 PM edit delete reply
Alignment is like genre. That's a weird comparison to make but both are terms created to describe the general trends of a thing that people get the weird idea in their heads are meant to define the thing.
I'm being too general. A movie doesn't have space battles because it's Sci-Fi, it is Sci-Fi because of the space battles. And just because you're calling it that doesn't mean it has to live up to some checklist. The checklist was created to describe the movies, the movies shouldn't be created by it.
Similarly, a person doesn't do Lawful and Good things because they are Lawful Good, they are Lawful Good because they tend to do Lawful and Good things. And they can choose not to at anytime, but if they do that enough they need a new descriptor.
But, both cases, people get caught up in classification so much that they can get upset when things don't follow their system, even though the system was created by the things rather than vice-versa.
Long story short, I'm agreeing with you in a wordy, pedantic way.

kriss1989 26th Sep 2011, 5:07 AM edit delete reply
Also, there is nothing saying an Evil person can't be generous or Loyal. Or love. Nobody calls themselves 'Evil', they all have justifications.
