Of course there ain't enough ponies in a nutshell; you can hardly fit ONE! Even if it's a very, very small pony.
I know because I tried!
Also I got here before Raxon! Does this mean I get a medal or something?

And then you can roll that giant nut right up to the squirrels' tree fort, and they'll try to stuff it into their hidey-hole! And once it's inside, we open up the door and leap out, surprising them and stealing all our stuff back!

The question I think is not how big the nut is or how big the ponies are (though those questions are important too), but how many is 'enough' ponies? Is there even such a thing?
Digo 23rd Sep 2012, 6:46 AM edit delete reply
Well, its more than 6, but we don't want to stuff too many ponies in our construct or we'll bust a nut.

I'm calling it here. She wants more detailed background NPC interactions so that the group can engage in character and world building so they can get the proper mindset.

Or she wants Companion Characters, one of the two. (For those not familiar with 4th, think of CCs like an NPC that joins the party, but it a lot weaker with less powers.)

I think Dash is referring to more active pony NPCs in general. So far, the only NPC ponies they've actually properly interacted with was Celestia/Nightmare Moon. The rest was monsters and encounters.

Looks like it's time for the DM to bust out the Flim/Flam brothers (Cider selling is a front for selling dangerous illegal weapons of mass destruction), or the Grand Galloping Gala (Somepony is planning an assassination/coup against Princess Celestia), or Photo Finish (Selling toxic/mind affecting beauty products), or Cherry Jubilee (Secretly running a slave business, with a cherry factory as a front), or Zecora (Cooking up voodoo ghosts).

Or the DM will just turn Derpy Hooves into an unintentional "reality warper" who the ponies need to stop from accidentally destroying Ponyville.

The part on "Derpy the reality warper" made me think about my explanation of her for a Pathfinder RPG inspired MLP comic.

Essentially Derpy is a Dual-Cursed Oracle, having to deal with having clouded vision curse (The explanation for her derped eyes and apparent bad eyesight), and a curse where everything she touches breaks.

And aside from being able to command the divine powers around her, she gets a mystery that I thought fit: "Heavens" Which allows her to reincarnate "as a star Child", which if Space Odessy:2001 is anything to go by, usually looks to be matured within a bubble; much like her cutie mark.

...Which also might explain why she's not (staying) dead.

Suddenly, ponies! Thousands of them! (I actually have no idea where this is going. Could be more players, more characters per player, a campaign/session centered around or involving more NPC ponies...)

Actually, I'd kind of like to see more alicorns in the show, if for no other reason than to prove that alicorn =/= god pony. Or at least some sort of mythology exposition on alicorns explaining just HOW they fit into the pony races.

I should draw Cabbage Patch (tentative name), the ultimate antithesis to the OC alicorn Mary Sue. He's an alicorn... who sells cabbages. That's it. May have been somewhat inspires by the cabbage guy from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Contrast with Alicorny, the ultimate parody of the OC alicorn Mary Sue. His special talent is "corny" jokes, and he is the most hideous, garish pony you've ever seen. He has roughly Elan from Order of the Stick's personality.
Jorlem 22nd Sep 2012, 12:55 PM edit delete reply
Thing is, from what has been shown in the show, the alicorns do fit as god ponies, but only if you are comparing them to gods from Greek (or similar power level) mythology, instead of the omnipotent, omniscient God from Christianity.
aylatrigger 22nd Sep 2012, 4:34 PM edit delete reply
So they fit perfectly as D&D type gods.
Celestia is the LG goddess of the Sun and Sealed Evils in a Can with Domains of Sun, Civilization, and Justice (going by 4th Edition domains). Nightmare Moon is the NE goddess of Eternal Night and the Moon with Domains of Darkness, Tyranny, and the Moon. Luna would be the NG (I think) goddess of the Moon, Change, and Darkness. Discord would be the CE god of Madness, Trickery, and Change. Cadence, if you would like to use her in a game as a goddess, would be the LG goddess of Love, Hope, and either Skill or Protection. I would count her as a demi-goddess though or a very low rank goddess. The Queen of the Changelings is not a goddess, but is a very high level changeling.
Karilyn 23rd Sep 2012, 6:22 AM edit delete reply
Karilyn
I think Alicorns are closer to Norse god power levels than Greek god power levels.

Greek gods are more or less true immortal, and incapable of dying. It's been implied in the show that Discord and Chrysalis seriously threatened the Princess's lives.

So: Can be killed, but otherwise ageless, and "really strong" compared to mortals? That's totally Norse power level.

Re: ". . . the LG goddess of Love, . . ."

What? Lawful Good?
Don't the Chaotic ponies get any Love? Cadance would have to be NG to be valid for everybody.
("Was it NG for you, too?")
Blue Moon of Storms 23rd Sep 2012, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
I agree with Tuxgeo. In Pathfinder, the best Analogue to Cadence is "Shelyn" which is also Neutral Good.

... Although I'm as confused as everyone else as to who is replying to who.

Here's the other two:
Celestia: NG - Because she never seems to care about law save for keeping ponies from hurting each other.
Luna: CG - Don't Tell me you didn't see Luna rage in "Luna Eclipsed", she's totally a barbarian at heart, with a hint of Bard.
terrycloth 24th Sep 2012, 12:14 PM edit delete reply
I see Celestia as LG (it helps when you Are The Law, but she's all about keeping things orderly as well as pleasant) and Luna as LE (she's obsessed with getting what she sees as her due and isn't shy about abusing her position for personal gain).

Luna's a 'high-functioning' LE most of the time, though, since her goals mostly revolve around having people like her so she can't go totally nuts. Except when, you know, she goes totally nuts.
Blue Moon of Storms 25th Sep 2012, 3:13 AM edit delete reply
I disagree with Terrycloth, I think that Luna was more "under the influence" during her Nightmare Moon period. And By that I mean, she was brainwashed by Cthulu, and Celestia had to save her.

It parallels a bit with A Pathfinder God that had much the same happen, although, he is still waiting for his full cleansing.

Back on track, Luna Strikes me as one that seeks social justice, but is a free spirit first. Here's a run down.
-Emotional, to the point she rages when she feels wronged; at which point her natural powers become manifest. (Proof she's a Barbarian, and thus Chaotic.)
-Her first instinct is to leap in to save Ponies, (Good), and is perpetually frustrated that no-pony sees her as a hero, (a common backstory for Heroes way too idealistic, and thus "Good", for their own Good.)
-Has a Flair for the Dramatic. (A common Trait among Bards, which are often Chaotic, but not always.)

If those reasons aren't enough for you, then at least know that I'm picking up a really strong Chaotic Good Vibe from her.

As for Celestia, How often Have we seen her enforce Law? Or any Lawful Behavior?

Law Enforcement: 0
Times She's Helped the cause of Good: 5
Times She let a Good intentioned, but misguided Criminal off the Hook: 2
Times Pranked, or otherwise mislead another: 2
Official Duties: 3 (Raise the sun, bless others with her appearance and give them boons, teach others magic.) None of which are law integral.

Really Here's My Comparisons of Both to Pathfinder deities:
Celestia=Serenrae= NG Goddess of the Sun, and redemption.
-Both seek to redeem the wicked.
Luna=Desna= CG Godess of Stars, and Dreams.
-Both believe that the World needs to be Experienced to the fullest.
-Both Want those that follow them to follow their heart's desires.
-Both Venerate the Night.
-Neither has much in the way of rules (Leaving the rules for the lawful Gods.)
-Both want to spread hope and Joy; even in the darkest nights.
-Both seek to create Beauty.
-They Both Seek to minimize fear. (Need one remind you of how Frustrated Luna was that the populace feared her?)
-Both Are Artistic, with a flair for the Dramatic.
-Both seem to Travel a lot. (Mostly Implied with Luna, she seems to be... out of the way a lot isn't she?)

If I haven't convinced you of... anything at this point, then at least know that me and a lot of people disagree with you. And that at the very least Our opinion is just as valid as yours.

P.S. There's another Chaotic Good Deity in Pathfinder Who's goals are more or less what you describe Luna's to be: Have people like him. And He's the Archetypal Romanticized, Roguish, Hero... His name... is Cailean Cayden: The Drunken Hero, or the Lucky Drunk. When he's not fighting Evil, he's known to be the god every other god likes; Charming every single being in the realm.

P.S.2. All the evil gods in Pathfinder, hate being seen as "Likeable".
Blue Moon of Storms 25th Sep 2012, 5:44 AM edit delete reply
Oh yeah, One more thing I forgot to mention: One Site I visited said that the most likely motivations of a "Lawful evil" Character was "Power and Security". Neither of which are Luna's motivations; especially in the episode we get to see her interact.

The other Motivations get further away the more one looks at it:

-"Achievement", a "Mildly Chaotic" evil Motivation that rounds out Neutral Evil; notably lower than most of her motivations.

-"Tradition/Conformity", A "Mildly Good" Lawful Motivation. Seems to be given lip service to, but she attempts to abandon it the moment it's explained that the times have moved on. She's also perpetually the odd one out.

- "Hedonism" the Chaotic Evil Motivation... She seems utterly perplexed at the idea of this, however, becomes a little too engrossed in the attempt to fit in.

-"Stimulation", the less good of the Chaotic Motivations. She's completely Ready to turn the Night into a big party. She fails because she misunderstood the purpose of the holiday. Once she figures it out, she delights in some Japery and modest scares, to feel the thrill of the Night from both sides. All in good fun of course.

-"Benevolence", the slightly more lawful of the Good motivations. She saves a kid from a Pool with utterly no hesitations or thought, Isn't that enough to prove that motivation exists?

-"Self-direction", The Better of the Chaotic Motivations. The part about "Self-Respect" being a core value is telling. Think about it, Luna has been trying to get others respect because her respect in herself was shaken when nobody appreciated her for who she was, or her work. That's the core of her Character, being who she is, and finding the strength to respect herself, by hoping others can respect her too.

-"Universalism", the more chaotic of the Good Motivations. Two Values associated with it are "Promoting Equality", and "Advancing Social Justice". Her Promoting Equality side is obvious, She wanted to be seen as Celestia's Equal about a thousand years ago, and she also wanted equality Between Night and Day. Although she got a little out of hand once her anger took over, and at that point, I'm going to assume she was possessed by Cthulu thanks to her weakened mental state. Her "Advancing Social Justice" part is also seen in this action, but happens again in her dedicated episode where, having perceived the holiday as a taunt against her, is quick to speak against it; as she feels personally wronged. She gets over it when she is shown that its all because they "Like being scared" though; and although she's still awkward about the idea, she now realizes that its a compliment, rather than an insult.

So, I hope this is a better explanation of why I think Luna couldn't be further from Lawful Evil.

Luna is Chaotic Good in my eyes. And the more I look, the more proof I find of this. And my convictions are strengthened.
