There's no table that determines what Rainbow Dash crash-landed in, by the way. The DM just rolled the die for the sound it makes.

Marrock 15th Sep 2011, 7:29 AM edit delete reply
I can remember when we'd have a player like that in the group... whomever was DMing would come up with some really stupid way for them to die fairly quickly.

Some would eventually learn their lesson, those we kept, the rest were invited to try playing something else, usually by Sam, who had the well-earned nickname "Hill Giant".

So, what's this about a healing surge? My experience with D&D is limited to the Neverwinter Nights games.
Mecryte 15th Sep 2011, 9:21 AM edit delete reply
A new healing mechanic introduced in 4e, healing surges automatically heal you up to 1/4 of your total health. As far as the surges themselves go, you have a limited amount per day. If you run out, healing will be extremely hard since most healing spells require you to spend surges.
Trivial 15th Sep 2011, 9:59 AM edit delete reply
What's the point of healing magic, then, if you spend something that you can use to heal automatically? Why not skip the spell?
AshesOfSaturn 15th Sep 2011, 10:05 AM edit delete reply
You can only access one per fight without healing powers or items.
Mecryte 15th Sep 2011, 10:08 AM edit delete reply
Ordinarily, you can't spend those surges in combat. Healing spells trigger a natural healing cycle in the body which can cause the body to repair itself. Surges represent the amount of times that your body can be made to heal itself before there isn't enough left in you to heal yourself with.
Trivial 15th Sep 2011, 12:21 PM edit delete reply
Ahh, I see. I don't know much about 4e. Pathfinder's my game.
The Red Mage 16th Sep 2011, 9:09 AM edit delete reply
As an aside, healing magic restores an extrabit of HP along with your surge value. Usually something like 1d6+WIS mmodifier. So, while you CAN use the surge on your own, it's still preferable to have a healer in your party.
Flutterguy 16th Sep 2011, 5:37 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, once D&D went to 4e, I switched to Pathfinder.
Tanuki Tales 22nd Apr 2014, 6:44 PM edit delete reply
Healing Surges are definitely one of the stupider things about 4th edition.
Katarani 15th Sep 2011, 8:51 AM edit delete reply
A proper DM rolls the die whenever he makes any decision. Let the players think that there's a table for everything, and he's not just making it up on the fly.
Mecryte 15th Sep 2011, 10:09 AM edit delete reply
First time combat is mentioned and we're up in arms over the 4e rules.
SaintAbsol 15th Sep 2011, 10:19 AM edit delete reply
It's the internet, buddy; they'll find any reason to start a debate if you're lucky, and an argument if you're not.
McBehrer 16th Sep 2011, 8:56 PM edit delete reply
Honestly, an argument and a debate are the same thing in my book, and that's "a good one." As long as all involved parties are reasonable and argue intelligently, I'm ok with it.
JRKlein 5th Dec 2011, 5:15 PM edit delete reply
Hell, this is surprisingly civil compared to most 3e/3.5/Pathfinder vs. 4e debates.
Blaizokaran 15th Sep 2011, 10:17 AM edit delete reply
...And now I question her intelligence.
terrycloth 15th Sep 2011, 11:06 AM edit delete reply
They're totally going to need a 'what did Rainbow Dash crash into' table, though.
DragonTrainer 15th Sep 2011, 6:50 PM edit delete reply
Question. Did Rainbow Dash spend 2 skill points to be literate or did she spend them on something else?
Newbiespud 15th Sep 2011, 8:47 PM edit delete reply
Barbarians don't start out illiterate in 4e. Though as to whether or not Rainbow Dash WOULD be literate in 3.5... Y'know, it could go either way.
DragonTrainer 15th Sep 2011, 10:31 PM edit delete reply
Ah, k. I'm still not familiar with 4e yet, so yeah. :p
Blaizokaran 19th Sep 2011, 11:10 AM edit delete reply
...Still unsure, only looking at this.
Matev 19th Sep 2011, 5:41 PM edit delete reply
Oh god, those Rainbow Dash faces....
Alex Warlorn 24th Sep 2011, 12:01 AM edit delete reply
WAIT! WHAT?! They're running this off of the 4E engine? But wouldn't the storytelling system be better for this kind of setting?
Arclight 28th Sep 2011, 8:13 AM edit delete reply
Yeah, it probably would, but doing it in storyteller would mean we'd be in Wangsty White Wolf World, and I don't think anypony wants to go there with MLP:FiM.
Lugbzurg 25th Sep 2011, 8:28 PM edit delete reply
Narrators have such great powers. They are so powerful, that they try not to get involved in any mortals' affairs.

Rainbow Dash just ticked one off. Now, he's getting involved.
UnfairAdvantage 7th Dec 2011, 5:24 PM edit delete reply
"Screw the rules, I'm Rainbow Dash."
Lady Chaomii 30th Jun 2012, 8:00 PM edit delete reply
Dear Celestia, the Rainbow Dash player in this comic acts EXACTLY like the Rainbow Dash player in our game! That's just scary. XD
