So, we're measuring Cadance's horn power at 1.21 gigawatts?

Why do I always get the feeling I am the only one who thinks that Frankie goes to Hollywood would go better with this scene than Huey Lewis & the News?

Funny, there's a song in Sailor Moon called "The Power of Love". It's pretty good, too.

I actually started casually watching the redub of the classic series, a while ago, and comparing a few episodes to the old ones as i went... I've watched the DIC dub ages ago, back when it as on TV, before school with my oatmeal...

GOOD LORD was the show butchered for the US release like holy shit... I do not even remember how I didn't notice how chopped up it was, considering I was able to notice how much Power Rangers was cut up... And even noticed those Zord sequences where they literally used the toys because they didn't have the models or suits for Zord stuff yet...

The funniest part is the Effeminate General(forgot his name) being a GIRL in the dub...

One weird thing is a lot of the monsters in the new dub suffer from Pokemon Syndrome, when they had actual dialog before... Last I left off, I was a little bit into the secon non-filler storyline... Feels a little early to dig into time travel, but I understand Sailor Moon stuff power-creeps worse the DBZ, so I've no idea where it goes after this....

Cept that there's some Blinged Out Himedere Scout that gets blown up by Akita toriyama's Cat in Death Battle.

As someone who had never watched Sailor Moon until the YouTube algorithm in its infinite wisdom decided to recommend a Sailor Moon clip channel to me out of the blue, I have to say that while the DiC dub definitely has some egregious problems (most infamously, "cousins"), the Viz Media dub is way too conservative with its localization and it feels kind of bland and forgettable as a result.

To me, the perfect dub would be one that captures the manic energy of the DiC dub without cutting or censoring any content.

You're thinking of Zoisite, one of the more well known instances of She's A Man In Japan in anime circles. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShesAManInJapan

Back then, American media companies were much more scared of public backlash - up to and including getting shut down for "airing obscene content" - over showing LGBT+ anything.
Anvildude 9th Feb 2021, 2:29 PM edit delete reply
I mean, to be fair, it's not even until the last few years (and Stephen Universe and Netflix being like, "Yo lets do this!") that there's been significant LGBT representation in western animation. Though now Disney's even in on it, so I think it's now 'officially' good-to-go.

Which ended up causing them to make things oh so much worse later on in BSSM: DiC decided that the way to deal with Haruka and Michiru's relationship was by making them cousins, not having looked ahead to see just how blatant the relationship gets, (even with the animation, which is a lot harder to deal with than the line implying they're into BDSM).

Not looking ahead is also probably why the North American release of Utena (TV) stalled for so long: They approved based on the first duel arc and then discovered then other two had not just homosexuality but no less than three incestuous pairings, (one implied as possibly having happened, one that's probably one-sided lust, and one that is active and unmistakable), and a rape.
Cliff_Robotnik 12th Feb 2021, 6:02 AM edit delete reply
To be fair, getting information regarding foreign shows and film was WAAAAAY harder back then.

...and I am still amused by how they turned a simple gay relationship into a incestious gay relationship due to trying to censor it... Just made it way worse...

They just gave up entirely with the dub when it got to the Trans Senshi, the Starlights...

Another company took over at that point, I think, or was it just never dubbed before?

Still, I am enjoying the redub, as I find the story and emotions interesting... Even if the breakup in the second arc between Moon and Tux felt forced and utterly pointless to the point it was obviously not in the manga... And it was not.

If I wanted a dub that was borderline an abridged series in how much they changed, I'd watch Ghost Stories.... Which had a dub so legendary it got re-translated into Japanese....for example, they Made the "Big Sis" archtype girl a ultra-Catholic totally-not-formerly-bicurius-brainwashee instead, which pretty much cracked me up every time she opened her bigoted mouth.

I dare say it is the original Abridged, despite being a official dub.

Back on Sera Mun, I am just glad to get the anime's story, unfiltered by mid90s censorship and localization... Which is a bit more important to me then any humor I might get from bad localization decisions.

We didn't even GET the beach episode... Cliff_RobotnikUncharted was just Weeeiiirrd...

Mars heads off to a beach under some shrine training BS, the others call her BS and show up... And while Chibi wonders off and befriends a fucking PLESIOSAUR, the others end up in a Haunted House themed hotel...

No monsters even, but a volcano does go off at one point... I can see why it got skipped, but it was one of the funnier episodes.

Also, Baby Plesiosaur is cute.

My first exposure to Sailor Moon (having studiously avoided watching it) was the hilariously inane fanfic "The NeoZero Double Blitzkrieg Debacle," an endless Daria/Sailor Moon crossover story that was, thankfully, well sporked in the style of MST3K.

Not the best first impression, I will admit. I watched most of the first dubbed season of the original show recently and, while I understand the appeal and something of the "magical girl" genre now, it's just not my style.

I was one of those people who avoided Sailor Moon at all costs, as well. Though that didn’t stop me from watching Cardcaptor Sakura on Toonami after school. I think I was waiting for Hamtaro to come on, then... Can’t remember, been a while.

You, uh, do realize that the Elements are LITERALLY magical girls, right?
Winged Cat 9th Feb 2021, 9:36 AM edit delete reply
Winged Cat
Technically, any young female unicorn (or other inherent magic user) in this setting is a magical girl.
Guest 9th Feb 2021, 10:45 AM edit delete reply
Ah, but only the elements fit the trope. Unicorn mares are "magical" and "girl" but are not "magical girls."
Jennifer 10th Feb 2021, 9:50 PM edit delete reply
Mmm, I'll grant that. The catch is that it's easy to forget, because they only act as magical girls during season openers and finales. If the sailor senshi never did sailor things and just hung out together, went to school and solved problems without their magic (except when world-spanning villains turned up) they would be more like the Mane Six. Instead, they transform every episode (and in the same way, too, instead of new ways each season).
Cliff_Robotnik 12th Feb 2021, 6:12 AM edit delete reply
They are even more Magucal Girl on the human side of the mirror...

I think EQG would of been way, WAY better if they but the bullet and went full Magical Girl with it... Then again I also thing MLP would of been better if they leaned more into the Adventure and fantasy aspects rather then Slice of Life every episode cept the seasons bookends.

I am in the group hoping the next series leans into that, rather then rehashing g4s lore, characters and plots(giggity) , or Rose, regress closer to... *shudder* G3...

All that aside, and back on the topic of Magical Girls, I'd love to see the Mane6 blast Kyubey to oblivion with the Elements of Harmony...

Random question: Anyone know any good MG shows that aren't anywhere near as dark as Madoka, but not as Brainless as Glitter Force/Precure?

Everything I see is one or the other, cept Sailor Moon, which has a good balance...

So the GM is allowing love magic to have mechanical effects, eh? Not much of a problem since these guest PCs aren't planned to be present beyond this session, but long-term it seems like it could have a lot of potentially problematic mind control effects. (Not that Cadance's player seems likely to seek these out, but she could trip across them innocently.)
gamemaster80 9th Feb 2021, 10:37 AM edit delete reply
I don't really remember how 4E works (I know Will was a separate AC the enemy attacked instead of a score the player used to roll against an attack, but on going saves?) but I would think it can easily be the GM rewarding an extra saving throw against the spell holding him due to Roleplaying, maybe even a bonus attached.
starfall 9th Feb 2021, 2:44 PM edit delete reply
Ongoing saves in 4E were just rolling 10+ on a d20. There were only a few things that gave bonuses to saving throws anywhere. Surprisingly uncomplicated for something in D&D.

Did they already do the "Want it, Need it" spell thing with Mr. Smartypants in this? 'cause that seems like it might be very Love Magic Debacle.

Weddings are a special time for two ponies to get together, the love they have is the most strong power that exist, for trying to break that in name of the Moon (and books) you will be punished!
