Story Time! Any stories of ostensibly being one class but constantly falling into the roles and tropes of a different class?

Also, Spudventures took a bit of a break this week, but my friend Xencarn's been streaming his own games, and we're putting them on my channel too! Because why not?

We had a kobold paladin who was dexterity-based. She ended up being our rogue because she had the Urchin background and was the only one with thieves tools.

Similar story. My Tiefling Monk (path of shadow) had thieves' tools due to the Urchin background, so I was often the substitute Rogue.

Another similar story- had a Dorroc Guardian (both homebrew- but think Fantasy "Motie"-like, and the class was a martial protection-based class) who had the Urchin background, and so ended up being the go-to for lockpicking until we got an artificer in the group.

An opposite story! -- I once had a rogue in a party of murderhoboy tendencies and so in combat they focused on the dps. I often had to pick up the duties of party healer to keep the team in once peace, as well as party face to negotiate with the guards when we inevitable get caught by the city watch in the middle of dispensing indiscriminate justice.

No, I rarely picked any locks or doors.

Our paladin took some levels in rogue so he could steal some of our hard-earned loot and give it to charity. It took some time for the rest of us to figure it out.

Check out Drew Hayes’s book NPCs. 4 townspeople decide to be adventurers. The guard decides to be a paladin despite the fact that he’s got high Dex and prefers to be in light armor. The gnome dons wizard robes, ignoring his close relationship with a god and high wisdom. The mayor’s daughter will be a rogue, never mind her anger issues and bloodlust. The half-orc must be a barbarian with high intelligence and curiosity about magic. Or will they become the classes to which they are naturally better suited instead?

Dex Paladin dips gunslinger1 and rocks out with ranged smites and two weapon fighting. Hi wis Wizard goes Mystic theruge and has all the spells for days. Anger issues rogue works fine out of the box and enjoys stacking sneak attack and power attack. For High Int magic loving Barbarian.... I got nothing, A second wizard or an Alchemist or Artificer will be much more useful than a wall of meat.

Funny story, my elven wizard in my current 3.5 game is actually a pretty decent melee combatant. As in, often better than our monk (though neither of us hold a candle to the barbarian).

Still the most fragile member of the party of course, but between Mage Armor and defensive fighting I've got a better AC than the monk, and the Deadly Defense feat adds an extra d6 damage to my rapier against most targets. Best part is, that feat also works with Expertise, which I'm planning to get next level.

As you might imagine, I've been eyeballing the Spellsword-ish prestige classes, most of which are sadly "sword with magic" rather than "sword-wielding mage". Basically settled on Eldritch Knight, as it requires the least deviation.

D&D 3.5

In a game I'm currently in I'm a Human Monk. Due to setting reasons, I'm the only one in the party without any prior connections to any of the city's gangs, so whenever we have to go to the "nicer" side of town I usually end up being the Diplomancer, which usually involves a ton of Bluff Checks because of the Shenanigans we've been getting up to, despite my absolute Crap Charisma, no points in Bluff and a history of failed rolls whenever I get put on the spot.

I also played a monk who found himself thrust into a diplomatic role. This was a He-Man inspired Pathfinder campaign, full of big muscly meatheads. My guy had the highest Charisma in the group, a whopping 12, and was appointed the 'leader', although that mostly meant he had a direct line of communication to our actual boss. He was also the only character with any ranks in Diplomacy. So nine times out of ten, he did the talking.

FFRPG instead of D&D, but it maps over. Despite being a rogue, one of my PCs played more like a fighter as the campaign went on, at least in combat. 8 attacks per round when others are doing 1 or maybe 2, and being a dodgetank, will do that.

I was playing a rogue and, over an ENTIRE 1-20 session that took 3 years, I think I stole things like...maybe 5 times?

That said I just kept rolling 20s on arcana checks, everywhere I went. Zombies? Total expert. Portal to the shadowfell? Got you fam. A skein witch? Ah hell yeah dog I know all about those fools. My DM had me go part-bard. And I'm glad he did because it made my character a lot more fun to play, too.

I'm playing a barbarian in a pathfinder game that also has a paladin and a warpriest. Of those three, the warpriest has the most magic, and the lowest base attack bonus, but he has frequently shown both of the others up in straight melee. He once went one-on-one with a golem that was supposed to be a challenge for the entire party, and pounded it to bits with his bare hooves.

My Half-Orc fighter kept getting mistaken for a barbarian due to his propensity (and preference) for breaking open doors and treasure chests as opposed to fiddling with the locks or finding the keys. Not much of a mistake, honestly, but folks at my table were honestly surprised to learn that I didn't have so much as a single level of barbarian.

They then started suggesting I take levels in ranger with favored enemy: construct.

My barbarian in my last campaign acted a lot like a tactician. I don't know what 5e class is usually the tactician, but my guess is it's not the barbarian.

5e doesn't have any classes for in-world tactician. 3.5 had the Marshal and 4e had the Warlord, and they've chosen not to bring back either of those.

Not sure which class it would be, but my True Neutral barbarian was somehow the party leader/face despite having dumped both CHA and INT.

I had built him to be a serious mercenary in personality rather than just a bloodlust murder machine and his WIS was decent so I didn't play him like a drooling idiot. This apparently was enough to but me above the other players because they shitposted in-character like there was no tomorrow. The DM was a real easy-going type and the shitposting amused him so he'd typically roll with it, making things difficult for us because of stupid decisions but not outright killing the party even when we would've deserved it.

...What? What is happening on this page? What does your class have to do with your social roleplaying? Why couldn't a monk be deceitful? Why on Earth would you need to trade a level for a rogue one in order to act a certain way? "Oh shit, I'm a wizard, I can't intimidate this NPC. Hey, can I get a level in fighter?"

Smolder (Rarity) is annoyed that straight-shooter AJ is cramping her signature style, Gallus (RD) is annoyed that Sandbar is cramping part of his new style, and the DM is mostly joking around with an offer they know will never be taken.

Monks get Stunning Strike at level 5, which they can use to force anyone they hit with an attack to make a save or be completely shut down for a turn. Generally seen as the best Monk feature, or at least one of the best? I understand her wanting to keep it.

A while back I played a D&D 3.5 rogue who, thanks to an unexpectedly high constitution and some lucky hitdice rolls, wound up as the party "tank." The rest of the party was composed of other rogues and a monk - we were entirely "glass cannons" - but since I had the highest hitpoints I usually wound up on the front line meleeing with monsters that we couldn't afford to let at our squishier members. I rolled with that, putting most of my focus on getting stabbier and harder to put down.

Combat got pretty weird at higher levels. We were all dealing tremendous amounts of damage but we couldn't *take* it so whichever side won the initiative roll had a huge head start.

Offence scales much better in 3.5 than defences do. Even a max con Barbarian should expect to drop from taking a full attack after lv 11 or so.

My 5th ed gnoll rogue took two levels of barbarian for story reasons (and also for that sweet halving-all-physical-damage thing), and was essentially a frontline fighter for the whole game despite his fifteen other levels being rogue.

Never even did much sneaking and stealing, since we were in open jungle fights for the first parts of the game, and wide-open plains for the rest.

I was really more like a very agile fighter than anything roguish.

In my Hell's Rebels crew, you'd be forgiven for thinking our brawler multi-classed in ninja, because she is ridiculously sneaky when she wants to be. She once infiltrated an enemy fort all by herself and assassinated the commander by throatpunching him in his sleep.

Oh, and despite our brawler being the sneaky one, my ex-cop Constable-AT Cavalier character is the one with the ranks in Disable Device.

In one game our most damaging person was multi-classing elf. We normally called him barbarian, but I don't remember if he actually has any level in barbarian. On other hand, our warlock and our priest was mostly doing crafting and rarely did anything useful in battle.

The Werefrog once played a Nethermancer in Earthdawn (like necromancers, but with slightly less undead focus and has healing spells). However, the character was rather flamboyant, and since Nethermancy is the magic of life and death, he focused on life. His personality led to dressing like a troubadour (OOC, he dressed like a pimp, purple hat and all, in game interpreted as troubadour).

NPC eventually came around to hear his stories, yet he wasn't good at it, not like a real troubadour. However, he still found a way to get one of the local women to help warm his bed.

Well, I recently started playing a Warlock with a custom background I made called 'Stage Magician' (Proficiency in Sleight of Hand, Performance, and two Gaming Sets of choice). I bartered with my DM to give her Claustrophobia (DC 15 WIS save versus fear in enclosed spaces, but I can forego the check if tunnels are wide enough and she's not boxed in... she hates closed doors) in exchange for an extra Feat to bump Sleight of Hand to Expertise.

In her intro, I had her do a 'rabbit out of a hat' routine that left a primary spellcaster questioning everything they knew about magic.

Next session she went toe-to-toe with the party Rogue in a card game and overall won several gp from him.
